Registry Cleaner

Hi All,

I am using a Hewlitt-Pachard Laptop dv2736us running Windows Vista Home Premium.

I very recently had to reload my computer from scratch and don't have too many programs on it. I tried to load Windows Live Essentials and received Error Code #8000804.

I hunted around the Internet and I understand that this indicates a registry error. I downloaded PC Tools Registry Mechanic and scanned my computer. Over 500 errors were noted.

I guess I have a couple of questions.

Do I really need to clean up my registry and, if so, any recommendations for registry cleanup software?

What do you think of Registry Mechanic? PC Tools is a known brand so I imagine it's ok.

Lastly, 500 errors seems a bit many especially since I just reloaded my comouter from scratch! Any thoughts on this?

Also, my other computer runs Windows XP so, if I need a registy cleaner, I like to buy something that will also take care of that computer.

Thank you,

Bob

Yeah. Forget the registry clean up crap, especially as you just reinstalled everything.
Check the hard disk for errors. I'm at a Linux machine right now so I can't give you step by step instructions. Here's some instructions I found on a google search.

If you have errors, then you need a new drive. You might also want to look into smartmon tools to see if the drive is shot.

I hate to ask but why Windows Live, and what was the specific error, what did MS support say? Do you have Xp or Vista?

I would run windows updates first and then try again.

I have had this issue...possibly...I can't remember the error code. however, it was a firewall problem. I use mcafee and it would cause errors with certain windows updates. I disabled mcafee and enable windows firewall and it solved the issue. Your problem may be similar

Mortfurd,

Thanks for your recommendation but I ran the scan disc program and it is still a no go for loading Windows Live Essentials.

Yes. I got it back to the same condition in which I received it when purchased.

I ran windows update and "Windows Live Essentials" was the program that they recommended loading.

I have Vista and haven't yet tried MS support.

The error code was 80004004

Did it find and fix any errors? If so, your hard drive is shot and you will continue to have problems.

A newly installed system should not have registry errors. That it does suggests that there's a hardware problem, with the harddrive as the obvious suspect.

Hi Guys,

It's installed!

The problem was that another window opened up which had to be acted upon. I didn't know that there was a window there because instead of opening up on top of the currently used window, it opened underneath it.

Once I realized the window was there, I followed the directions and it worked perfectly.

Now, regarding the several hundred registry errors noted by Registry Mechanic, my computer is operating perfectly! So, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Thank you all for you help and input into this.

Bob

Actually, as an FYI, you'll probably see error 80004004 quite a lot with Windows Live, MSN Messenger, etc. ALong with helpful suggestions to do things like reload your hosts file or change your IE security settings. It is actually a much more generic error code than that - it pretty much means "something done gone bad, man" and that's it. With the Windows networking apps it's usually not Windows' fault (though the pitiful error handling is) but rather your firewall or internet connection. For example, I used to see this a lot on a network using a crappy netgear 834 router - bouncing the router fixed the problem every time, even though Windows insisted it was a local problem. HTH
