The Anti Vax Campaign Is Gonna Get Even Crazier...
when the distribution of Swine Flu Vaccine starts.
I hope that Media has the guts to expose them as the dangerous phonies they are...but I doubt it. |

Consider:
After the death of Walter Cronkite, a survey was run to determine the currently most trusted man in america. The winner was Jon Stewart. The united states has no journalists any more, they're all entertainers. The BBC and CBC tend to be better, but still fail miserably. They are routinely taken in by claims and lies that could be exposed by five minutes with google. This is why the print newspaper industry is floundering, blogs do research, they don't. |

Did anyone see the bit with Matt Lauer second guessing Dr. Nancy Snyderman because she didn't think there was a medical "controversy" about vaccines and autism?
http://lizditz.typepad.com/i_speak_o...snyderman.html The mass media seems to be based more on family connections than qualifications. No wonder it's so awful. In the words of Glenn Greenwald "They should convene a panel for the next Meet the Press with Jenna Bush Hager, Luke Russert, Liz Cheney, Megan McCain and Jonah Goldberg, and they should have Chris Wallace moderate it. They can all bash affirmative action and talk about how vitally important it is that the U.S. remain a Great Meritocracy because it's really unfair for anything other than merit to determine position and employment. They can interview Lisa Murkowski, Evan Bayh, Jeb Bush, Bob Casey, Mark Pryor, Jay Rockefeller, Dan Lipinksi, and Harold Ford, Jr. about personal responsibility and the virtues of self-sufficiency. Bill Kristol, Tucker Carlson and John Podhoretz can provide moving commentary on how America is so special because all that matters is merit, not who you know or where you come from. There's a virtually endless list of politically well-placed guests equally qualified to talk on such matters." http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwa...08/30/royalty/ |

I think even more dangerous than the stuff spewed by crazy anti-vaxers (the ones claiming they cause autism), I think the news media should do a better job allaying other baseless fears people have. Many people think you can get the flu from a flu shot. And this is bolstered by post hoc ergo propter hoc since many people get the shot in flu season, so they get sick before the shot has had a chance to build up their immunity sufficiently, and they attribute getting sick to taking the shot.
They'd do a lot better to tell people that antibacterial hand sanitizers don't prevent the spread of viral diseases and that the flu shot cannot cause the flu. |

Just read the crazy comments in any news section on diseases that might involve vaccines. They of course post links to homeopathy, natural health, and actual antivax sites where they got their crazy "info" from.
Read the comments section, only if you dare: http://www.cbc.ca/health/story/2009/...u-vaccine.html |

Jon Stewart is not a journalist?
Seems to me that since his comedic origins, Stewart's journalistic skill and integrity has increased exponentially. Comedy and journalism are not mutually exclusive. In fact, when done well, comedy enhances journalism and brings it to new audiences. Stewart is a very good journalist. Did you see his interview with Betsy McCaughey? With Jim Cramer? With Pervez Musharraf? (To name three that I can immediately bring to mind that kept me glued to the box) I think some people see only the comedy and miss out on the real journalism that Stewart does. |

"Half of pregnant women will refuse swine flu vaccine" went the story in the British press.
One person commented: Which half? Answer: The stupid half. |
