Irritating " comments" plastered over Youtube videos

What's with those "captions/comments" that often appear in Youtube vids now ?.
The adverts are bad enough but I hate those comment balloons etc appearing - usually trying to tell me what to think about what I'm watching.

I can't see a way to turn them off even if I'm logged in?

Go to Account > Playback Settings > Annotations and uncheck Show Annotations.

So that's what they call them. Thanks.

Be careful turning them off.
Although most people plaster them uselessly on videos.
People like me use them to put important information in their videos.

I made a nearly 10-minute tribute video and have been corrected on a few points. I used the Annotations to either clarify or cover them up.
