Obviously, sponsorship has done a great deal for him financially. His talent is undeniable, and the prize money that comes along with that is substantial. But, I'd imagine the majority of his wealth comes from sponsorship and advertising deals.

And I actually think this is admirable. When a sportsman is able to obtain this status, it's usually not just due to talent. He has a great image, he is personable, and he is a great representative of his sport.

A tennis equivalent would obviously be Roger Federer. He's made $50 million in prize winnings in his career, but I would imagine the sponsorship and advertising deals have made him a great deal more. And I don't really think this would occur if he was a major prick who carried a big chip on his shoulder. He has amazing talent... but better yet, he represents his sport in a manner that should hopefully be emulated by the up-and-comers. In tennis terms, others such as Rafael Nadal have taken this to heart. Own up to your talent, appreciate your success... but learn to be humble and represent your sport in a gentlemanly manner.

So, I certainly congratulate Tiger on all of his success and wealth. Someone with integrity and manners deserves the success they achieve, and that counts equal to talent in my perspective.

Not by a long shot. Michael Schumacher and Michael Jordan have already been called that. Schumacher was almost certainly the first.

No link but in 2005 EuroBusiness magazine calculated that Schumacher was the first billion dollar athlete and a bit of research shows that to be very likely.

Okay, I'll say it, and get this thing derailed right now: Golfers are athletes?

Those golf carts don't drive themselves! Those golf bags don't carry themselves!!

Oh, wait, for the pros, yes, they do.

Golf has got to be the only sport where you drive yourself to the next play. It'd be a lot more interesting if you had to run to the next hole carrying your clubs, with your time to the tee affecting your score.

Are you aware that some people walk the course? I, for one, hate courses where carts are mandatory. IMO it ruins the game, though it does enable easier beer drinking ...

Of course. What does that have to do with the question? You can be a champion knitter, and an athlete, that doesn't mean being a knitter makes you an athlete.

In any case I was being jokey, responding to a jokey post; as I understand the PGA pros do walk the course. I don't think they carry their own bags, though.

Let's be honest, a lot of pro golfers look like they get their workouts 12 ounces at a time, and would suffer a heart attack if forced to run bleachers. I find it amusing that they get the same categorization as a successful ironman, say.

ETA: I'll happily call Woods an athlete - he clearly works out and is in great shape.

Yet more proof how evil and racist America is, I guess.

I mean, think about it. Imagine that someone told you even ten years ago (let alone 20 or 30) that in 2009, there is going to be a black president, and that the first-ever athlete billionaire is going to be black -- and a black golfer, at that.

You'd say their off their noggin'.
