Firefox and Vista

So my computer died, and I bought a Dell with Vista.

And now, Firefox crashes EVERY time I use it. And then it is impossible to shut it down in Task Manager.

I have now dropped Firefox and are just using IE. No problems. But I don't like the tabs in IE and IE has no spellcheck.

Anyone got any solutions for Firefox?

* Latest version?

* close Firefox
* open up your firefox settings folder ( probably C:\Users\YourNameHere\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefo x\ ) and delete the profiles folder. This will nuke all your settings including addons and bookmarks, so beware.
* start Firefox
* ???
* profit!

Alternative idea. Get Safari. Comes with iTunes. Is a good simple product. Is the only one that conforms to standards.

I've been using Firefox on Vista for nearly 2 years now.
No problems. Doesn't the latest version of IE has tabs as well?

oooh...Safari. Does its tabs function work like Firefox?

I had also heard that Zonealarm Firewall was my problem. I turned that off, but it still didn't help.

I think its just Vista. It is evil. Created by Satan to make me cry.

I have no knowledge of how Firefox works. However I can have heaps of pages open at the same time and yet only one Safari application running. This means that in the task bar there is only one Safari box.

One advantage of Safari over other browsers is that I have several buttons I can press that are my favorites.

You might try deinstalling and then reinstalling Flash.

Yeah, it could be ZA 'cause every time Firefox updates ZA has to recognize the new version, and if it doesn't automatically ask for FF to be reconfigured you'll have to do it by hand.

I've also found that when I shut down ZA it's still running in the background unless I open Task Manager and end the process in there.

ETA: Whoa momma, those meds are making me scatterbrained... I don't have ZA running on the Vista machine, only on the XP ones... sorry...

Am I to assume that you mean "The only one that at a given point in time was the first to pass the few dozen tests making up a subset of the hundreds of standards specified when tested against Acid2/3"? I'm not aware that Safari implements, for example, SVG or CSS3 fully.

It's not Vista. I'm using Vista and Firefox works just fine for me.

Try uninstalling Firefox and then downloading the latest version. If that doesn't work, check Mozilla's website to see if there are any known issues.

@Shrike: Yes, IE7 & later have tabs.

ok, so I uninstalled all these plug-ins and extensions that I don't use on Firefox. Cross your fingers for me cause I think...just maybe...possibly..I solved the problem.

It's easy to get carried away with those extensions. I have about five running on my machine at work, but exactly one here. I have NoScript running, just because I like to click on phishing links every now and then (having removed any reference to email addresses or similar from the url) just to see how plausible they are.

I just checked and I have 61 extensions installed plus various scripts that go along with the grease monkey and stylish extensions. About the only downside is that it takes about 10 seconds for my FireFox to startup but once its running I rarely have problems.

There add plugins/addon that will cause IE problems as well. It might be an obscure toolbar installed by a CD burning package for example. If you keep your third-party software up-to-date as well as Windows updates, you're less likely to run into compatibility problems.

Been running FF and Vista happily for a while but recently FF warned me that my version of WPF caused problems - see https://www.mozilla.com/en-US/blocklist/

Firefox told me yesterday that its .Net extension was causing Firefox to become unstable and frequently crash.

seems to be pretty ok..for now.

It's possible there's something wonky with your Vista installation (or a virus/trojan?). I'm using an OEM 64-bit Vista installation on the PC I built last year and I have zero problems with Firefox. Of course, I only have three plug-ins installed: Image Zoom, AdBlock, and Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant (whatever that is).

When it comes down to it, though, I only use Firefox out of inertia. I think the current version of IE is a pretty good browser, and if Firefox was causing me problems I'd have no qualms about moving to it.

i have imported all my favorites from Firefox and adjusted the zoom setting. more importantly, I added a spell check function, which is one of the best things about Firefox. so it looks like, for now, im back to IE.

and IE has NEVER caused my computer to get nutty.

Occasionally I'll get an issue with Firefox. An uninstall, then reinstall does the trick.

I guess Firefox just doesn't like you, parky76. I have Vista and I never have any trouble with Firefox. That is, it never screws up my computer. I still prefer IE7.

Firefox will leave some of its setting files in your user folder:
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Pro gram Files\Mozilla Firefox
maybe some junk is still lying around there.

Even though I concede IE8 is not that bad, as a graphic designer, IE is has been my nemesis for too long.
My main reason to use FF is bookmark sync but mainly Adblock.

I've been using Google Chrome and it's so much faster, and more reliable than Firefox! Firefox has become such a cumbersome monster, it's hard to tell the difference between it and Internet Explorer anymore.

This bit makes me curious. I've not really used Vista much, but if you can't kill a user process from its Task Manager, then something is wrong, and that something isn't firefox.
