"The Mayans Warned Us"...

The latest line being used in ads to sell "2012" the upcoming Roland Emmerich POS film.
From the man who brought us "Day After Tommorow" and "10'000 BC". A real promoter of solid science is Roland Emmerich.

Agreed. And Emmerich is adding fuel to the fire. Besides, the guy is a crappy filmmaker.

The day after tommorow was not TOO bad. it was distracting. I expect this film might also be distracting for the hour or two you watch it, as long as you can cut away the woo , and see the film for the distraction only.

The movie is clearly a work of fantasy/sci-fi fiction; the ad slogans are playing with the currently popular "2012" myth/meme, but they're not pretending that the story is based on anything real or scientific. It's all in good fun for the sake of another dumb*** disaster picture.

I don't care when films do stuff like this when they're clearly fiction. I really liked The Gift even though I don't believe in ESP. Expelled, however...

There are times when I will happily go to the pictures, and check my coat, hat, and brain at the door, and simply enjoy 2 hours of utter crap.

Just call it a time out.

"The Mayans Warned Us"...

What does that really mean? You should have maxed your credit cards out, not worried about long term damage to your liver and engaged in unsafe sex because there was no long term price to pay after December 2012?

Hell, I did that every day before Mayan prophesy came to my preview movie screen.

The Mayan's prophesy turned out to be behind the Senex life style.

I'm always ahead of the curve

I remember seeing a card in a trailer for it that said something along the lines of "Science has proven it".

I don't suppose the movie portrays ancient Mayan society as too dumb to live within its means and failing catostrophically. That would detract from the image of them as wise enough to predict the end of the world a thousand years into the future.

I wonder how many people fell for this claim about the 1980 film Hangar 18

Quote:
This film was produced by Sunn Classic Pictures, the leading "four-wall" distributor of documentaries. Although this was a straight science fiction film, Sunn's TV spots promoted it as if it were another of their documentaries that would "reveal the truth about UFOs" even though the space shuttle which was used in the film had not yet had its first launch.

The thing about this stupid claim is that the Mayans have done nothing of the kind, it's just some dumb fantasy dreamed up by delusional New Agers. In fact, modern day Mayans think all of this 2012 business is a bunch of crap. I blogged about this in much more detail here.

Yep, and we all need one now and again. I found the movie, The Sixth Sense, positively intriguing. And Willis's performance wasn't all that bad, either.

You can say whatever you want about the Mayans, but you can't deny that they had a highly accurate calendar. That means we ignore their predictions at our own peril.

We have a highly accurate calendar too. It corrects itself when necessary and everything. However, I have it on good authority that the Earth did not come to an end at the end of any of them. We just go to the store and buy a new one. I could be pedantic and make one that was good for thousands of years, but I would hope that no one was stupid enough to think that when that calendar ended, it meant that I thought that the world was going to end on that date. I would more likely mean that it was time to start again at the beginning, or possibly get a new calendar from whomever was making them at the time. Maybe the Mayans planned to make an updated calendar when the current one ran out, to take into account whatever they had managed to learn since making the old one. Maybe add in any new holidays that were created in the meantime.

I watched the movie - now my brain needs to be scrubbed with bleach & a wire brush.

I wasn't expecting anything but a movie with some good SFX - it didn't even have that!

It does not open for a another few weeks, so I presume you saw it on at a preview or you got a pass for a showing for critics (not that hard if you are good buddies with a film critic for a major paper).

As you needing your brain scrubbed....that it was a Roland Emmerich film should have told you you would walk away dirty.

Their is no substantial proof that the Mayans believed that the world is going too end in 2012. More likely the Calendar would be set back to zero.

Is anybody else resisting the temptation to look behind Lensman's Spoiler/Hide?

I don't want to ruin my enjoyment of what I'm sure will be a fascinating and intelligent docudrama.

So here's what I think Lensman might be hiding from those of us who haven't had the privilege of seeing this fine film yet: 1) In a last-minute intervention, the hero's Special Holistic Intuitive Team saves the day by hitting Mexico and removing the present day Mayan Threat.

Am I close? Any other suggestions?
