Here is a list of all the free tools I use:
MyDefrag for all of my defragging,
Eusing Registry Cleaner
Eusing Registry Defrag (does more than regular defrag)
Spybot S&D for threat searches
AVG Virus free edition.

Many of these have settings for running scheduled scans, which the one you are asking about doesn't. I set everything up to update and run all while I am asleep.

ETA: I have found that the more a program does, the less it is on top of things. I keep all my functions separated into different programs.

Generally, if you don't know why you need it (especially if this is still the case after someone has recommended it), you probably don't need it.

Depends on the person. Anyone in my family with computer problems (slow boot, running slow, crashes, viruses, admedia, etc...) wouldn't know what it is, but definitely needs it.

ETA: Not recommending that specific program, just a generalization.

Multiple tools > suite of tools
For being completely free, it's not a bad suite. But even the BEST suite isn't as good as the individual tools.
