The Christian side-hug.

This is the most mindbogglingly ridiculous thing I've seen in a while, I just have to share!

Have any of you heard of this before? Christians only hugging from the side for fear of having sinful thoughts?

I wonder, do they do the side hug with same sex friends as well?

I was convinced that this was satire, but the tags in the video lead to a church that seems to be real from what I can tell. A prime example of Poe's law either way.

Any same-sex hugging can lead to instant homosexuality and the end of civilization as we know it.

Christians are all for peace and love, just not hugging, kissing, sex, or any display of friendly, loving emotion towards another human being.

Lol wut?!

What will they think of next? I hugged lots of people when I was still going to church, and there was no "side hug" nonsense.

Btw, that was the worst rapping ever.

Dogs side hug people's legs all the time. I'm glad to know they aren't having impure thoughts when they do so.

I'm thinking about moving my privates to my side just to prey (pray) upon the innocence of the Christian side hug. Left side or right, do you think?

Left, definitely. More right-handed people, you know.

Say you are standing facing the Christian. Being right-handed, he'll start to his right (your left) to apply the side-hug, and then bingo! Carnal thoughts! Impiety! Hellfire and damnation!

Doesn't matter. You'll cause him to lust in his heart, which is just as bad as the actual deed. He'll be on the Hellevator before he knows what hit him.

A joke popular in my part of the world:

Q. Why don't Mennonites like kissing?

A. It might lead to dancing.

Why don't Baptists make love standing up?

They don't want folks to think they were dancing.

The three great religious truths.

1: The Protestants don't recognize the Pope's authority
2: The Catholics don't recognize Martin Luther's statements
3: The Baptists don't recognize each other at the liquor store

Why should you always go fishing with two Baptists?

One man's "sick" is another man's "nearer my God to thee". You can't say Skopets didn't believe in their faith more than side-hugging Xtians. When Skopets made an effort to "remove" the offending member it wasn't an empty gesture they meant it.

I am tempted to write a parody of Joel Hogson's Sidehackin' song.

I got one verse, so far:

Side-huggin' is the thing to do,
And it doesn't hurt to be a lowly prude.
Take a friend you like and a little love,
If they come on full, give 'em a shove!
Sidehuggin'll do for friends' exchange.
Anything more than that, and you're now engaged, yeah!

But, that's only a rough draft. I will try to work on it, some more, later.

Ok, as usual I'm going to ruin the party with some background.

What you're seeing here is the confluence of 3 separate trends.

The "side hug" has been a staple of protocol in YMCA camps -- and, I'd speculate, other summer camps -- for quite some time now. At least 15 years, in my experience.

The purpose was liability. If you only hug campers by putting an arm around their shoulder, you avoid any misinterpretation that might arise (pardon the pun) from hugging the way we normally hug family and friends, which is face to face, or as we say here in the South "hugging your neck".

More recently, hugging has become rather startlingly prevalent among young folks. High school kids hug each other like we used to shake hands, high-five, or nod. Even boys hugging boys, which in my day was unthinkable outside of the football field, and even then only after a seriously killer play. It's become so commonplace that many schools have resorted to banning hugs altogether.

What you're seeing here is a reaction against frontal body contact via an organized effort (and this is the 3rd trend) using Xian pop bands.

Of course, to anyone outside this bubble of white suburban Xian youth culture, it's laughable. Not only the message, but also the messenger, of course.

To me -- because I'm immersed in this culture -- it's perfectly understandable. Of course they're going to have a yup-hop group disseminate this propaganda against front hugs. And of course it's going to be utterly ineffectual.

But no, it's not mindboggling at all. Not if you know the backstory.

She was making money on the side.

Pre-marital hugging is definitely sinful, as is same-sex hugging. Hugging your husband or wife in public is also clearly inappropriate.

There is no greater danger in society today than those who warmly embrace their friends.

Hugging family members from front on is not a problem; I mean, it's incest, but we all know the Bible is cool with that.
