Newfoundland missile

OK photographers, here's your chance. A Canadian friend sent me a link to an article claiming a "secret missile test" was observed over Newfoundland Monday afternoon. This photo is the best I could find. Maybe someone can find a better one.

The Internet is abuzz with follow-up comments, claiming this was either a secret test by the US, the French or the Russians. (The wackiest story so far being that it was a missile launched by the French Army from St. Pierre Island. Having been there I can assure you there is NO French Army on St. Pierre- Just a dozen Gendarmes with night sticks.)

I have a very good idea what this, having seen similar things in the late afternoon here in Vermont. Anyone care to take a stab at just what this really is? (Some hints: The photo was taken around sunset. The "missile trailing a fiery exhaust" stayed in view for up to 15 minutes. The photographer saw two other similar missiles around the same time. And finally, Newfoundland is on a Great Circle route between the US East Coast and Europe.)

OK, have at it, and let's see if you reach the same conclusion I did.

15 minutes??? That would have to be the slowest missile ever built!

It's a (non-persisting) contrail in evening sunlight. The dark front part is due to the sun being behind the aircraft, so the font part of the contrail is in shadow.

Well, all pretty obvious to folks with critical thinking skills....or who spend a modest amount of time looking up at the sky. But the amount of "woo" being posted on line about this is truly depressing. One poster insisted it couldn't be an airliner since one wasn't observed even through binoculars. Being directly under that same great circle route I often observe contrails illuminated by the setting sun. A plane at FL390 plus and 50 miles distant rarely shows up even with binoculars. I'm hopeful that some of the more paranoid folks posting their "theories" about this don't vote and aren't planning to breed.

Was that reported as THIS Monday afternoon?
I mean the 8th feb?

Because it was originally reported nearly two weeks ago as a UFO:

It is a Ghost. The ghost of the Hindenburg. You can see the rough blimp shape, and the flame behind .

I believe you are correct. My Canadian contact sent this to me Monday evening, but looking around a bit more on line it looks like this "incident" was a couple weeks ago. Doesn't look as if Canada has severed diplomatic relations with France, Russia or the USA over this "missile launch" so far.....

A typical DEBUNKER tactic: IGNORE the EVIDENCE in favour of some bizarre PSEUDO-SCIENTIFIC "theory" that no REAL scientist would take seriously. Frankly, I'm annoyed at the level of ABUSE the debunkers are throwing at me.

Prove there was a blimp in the area... or for that matter, a squid... If you can't then obviously as previously hypothesised, God did it.

Proof: The object was seen to 'move in a mysterious way'.

This is obviously a reflection off a thin cloud layer of a giant blimp-eating squid far below. The squid itself is, as typical, hunting approximately 200m underwater. It shows up so clearly as it's illuminated by the powerful lights of a squid fishing fleet.

I don't understand why people insist on making up bizarre and unlikely explanations for such a mundane phenomenon.
