Is "Snapple Real Fact #129" a lie?

I just opened a bottle of Diet Snapple Peach Iced Tea, and was confronted with the following "fact" under the cap:

Quote:
"Real Fact" #129

Mosquitoes have 47 teeth.
Well, my BS meter went off loudly.

I was under the impression that a mosquito has a proboscis with sucking parts, but no teeth. So I went a-Googlin'.

The first thing I found was this:

http://www.fieldmethods.net/curio/in...itoesHaveTeeth

Which then led to this:

http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives...5590.Zo.r.html

Which says this:

Quote:
Mosquitos are insects, in fact they are related to the flies (family Diptera). They don't have teeth the same as we (or other mammals) have. They do have serrations (jagged edges) on their mouthparts which they use (like a steak knife !) to pierce the skin of the animal they are biting.

Only the female mosquito bites, and this is because she needs a meal of fresh blood before she can lay her eggs. Mosquitos lay their eggs in stagnant (smelly !) water.

The mosquitos mouthparts are very modified versions of those of other flies. For example, the house fly (Musca domestica, as scientists call it) has mouthparts which are modified to suck up liquid food like a sponge !
Well, maybe they have 47 serrations on their proboscis, but these are certainly not teeth. Does anyone know of any more of information which could clear up this question? Or is Snapple just full of it?

Here's a page with most of the Snapple "facts":

http://www.armenianteens.com/snapple_facts.php

Some of them are boringly obvious.

Quote:
#2 Animals that lay eggs don't have belly buttons
No sh*t Sherlock!

Others are false:

Quote:
#74 You share your birthday with 9 million others in the world
Actually, if there are 6,000,000,000 people in the world, that number divided by 365 equals over 16 million people who share your birthday.

Others could use some qualification:

Quote:
#39 An ant's smell is stronger then a dog's
Do they mean that an ant's SENSE of smell is stronger, or that the ant smells stronger? Maybe I should get some ants and a dog and test the latter hypothesis.

This is why I don't buy Snapple products. If I want a bunch of incorrect facts, I can peruse the JREF forum for free.

Just make sure to use a very fine mesh screen when sniffing the ants. Wouldn't want to get an ant up your nose.

This makes no sense. It is true if you use a normal sheet of letter-size office paper, but a little thought experiment puts the lie to it. If I started with a sheet twice the size of a letter-size page, but half as thick, I can fold it once to get a folded sheet that is the same size and thickness as the letter paper. I can extrapolate this out as far as I like (or at least until the paper is so thin that it is no longer paper) so that I can increase the number of folds I can get.

I then went to the bathroom and pulled a long sheet of toilet paper out of the dispenser. I had no trouble folding this eight times. So the "fact" is just BS.

Plus, shemp, it doesn't specify fold in half each time.

Again, poorly worded..

Try folding any piece of paper in half ( approx if it is irregular shape ) , each fold at right angle to the previous, more than seven times.. Always seems to bog down at seven for me..

I don't know why.. It might be an R&P thing...

Wrong. People are not born equally over the year. It can vary a lot, depending on various factors. E.g. in Denmark, most children are born in August, because in November, the cold sets in.....

So it's not false: you do (assuming a flat distribution) share your birthday with 9 million people, you just also share it with another 7 million.

Look, folks, Snapple also says it's "made from the best stuff on earth." Which is also not true. It's not very good.

I don't drink Snapple anymore anyway ever since i learned through an anonymous e-mail that the K on the Snapple bottle stands for the Ku Klux Klan.

Sure Jewish groups and the media insist it just means that it is Kosher but we know the real story plus that anonymous e-mail was forwarded to me from someone I kinda know a little bit.

Be fair. They take the best stuff on Earth, and turn it into crap. And they even throw an erroneous fact into the bargain.

In the meantime to be fair to the Snapple people, I like Snapple....If we were to inform them of their error regarding bug teeth, and they said they would correct it in future bottles, I would continue to drink the stuff, and think well of their organization.

Honestly, how can you drink the stuff? I always choke on the tea; there seem to be "bits" that get caught in my throat. Their juice is little more than dyed sugar water. Their second ingredient is usually "corn syrup." I mean, if Snapple uses the best stuff on earth, so does Pepsi, Welch's, and Gatorade.

Snapple is full of it. Mosquitos do not have teeth. A quick glance at the list found a few more false "facts": #28, 36, 87. Probably many more!

To be fair, regarding 87, you know what they meant. It's a semantic debate.

Yes, a mile is a mile is a mile is a mile, but I think this is an honest mistake since a nautical mile is longer than a mile.

Aren't there 366 birthdays? (though if your birthday is Feb 29, you would only share about 4 million birthdays). If these guys can't get their facts straight, how can you trust that they know how to make sody-pop correctly.

Why don't WE apply to Snapple to write a new set of indisputable facts? In true JREF fashion, I'm sure we could have an agreed set of 100 in, oh, well under 30 years. Provided Shemp doesn't bugger things up too much.

A mile may be a mile, but a nautical mile is a whole seperate unit. Don't let the fact that they both contain the word mile, confusing the two is as bad as confusing mile and kilometer.

Okay that last sentence seems to be missing something...so I'm not exactly sure I have you right.

But that's exactly what Btox and I were syaing, they obviously confused the two, which while incorrect isn't like the worst of informational sins.

The way I look at it, if you looked up how many teeth the bug has, any reputable entomological text should probably say they have serrations and would never use the word teeth. So suddenly interjecting the word teeth isn't just a violation of scientific principles, it's a violation of journalistic, linguistic, and publishing principles. If the book they checked had the word teeth, they should have checked better sources.

However I have much more sympathy when some lowly research intern with little science background looks in a book and sees "Nautical Miles" and thinks that's just another way of saying "mile at sea" instead of understanding that it is a whole separate measurment unit.

Just for you, Diogenes, I tried my own ultra-expensive experiment, to remove that lingering doubt caused by Cecil's unforgivable use of plastic. For an undisclosed price (oh, the sacrifice!) I obtained a sheet of newsprint, such as is used by the free campus newspaper here.

I first folded it in half 5 times, lengthwise. No troubles. I then folded the resulting strip in half three times. Still no troubles. Total: 8 folds. No fuss. Nine would probably have been possible, but I'm too lazy for that. Minimum possible disproof was enough for me.

I first folded it in half 5 times, lengthwise. No troubles. I then folded the resulting strip in half three times. Still no troubles. Total: 8 folds. No fuss. Nine would probably have been possible, but I'm too lazy for that. Minimum possible disproof was enough for me.

You violated the ' right angle ' rule... No cigar...

Blast!

Although I don't think I've ever actually heard it explicitly stated that each subsequent fold must be at right angles to the previous fold, just that it must be folded in half, so I may still claim that was just thinking outside the box to produce a solution

In any case, with a bit of care, massaging, and brute force it still does appear to be possible to end up with a slightly wrinkly rectangle after folding the sheet 8 times by hand (folding in half, perpendicular to the edges of the paper, each fold perependicular to the previous fold.)

And that's my inch of electric train movement.

I don't like Snapple because it does taste like colored sugar; it is way to sweet. Of course, I feel this way about most bottled or canned drinks. It ticks me off when sugar is added to fruit juice as well......ah, I but I digress into a regular tirade of mine.

As hard as i try to be a Dis_Reputable entomologist, we would never use the word teeth. in fact, when i opened this thread and read shemp's first post, i let out a "WHAT?!" that made a couple poke their heads in my office.

I think you guys are being a little tough on Snapple with regard to their mosquito teeth fact.

Does a sawblade have teeth?

Well assuming a sawblade has teeth then I think it's pretty reasonable to say that a mosquito that has a proboscis with serrations has teeth.

Part of the definition of tooth from Dictionary.com

1b) A similar structure in invertebrates, such as one of the pointed denticles or ridges on the exoskeleton of an arthropod or the shell of a mollusk.
