Here's to compensation!
Where would we be without bitter regret and deep personal scars to drive us onward and move mountains? Dreams would not be accomplished were it not for the many painful shortcomings in life, without which everyone would end up one of the Beautiful People, hoping to appear on a FOX reality show as the single most meaningful thing they've ever done or ever will do.
Yes, nothing would happen without compensation. Particularly, overcompensation. Don't knock it!

Don't you think you should compensate your father's spending years of his time and money raising you by hugging him?
Does not a father at least have the right to ask a hug from his son? |

For a change I have to say that American is on to something. Lot's of things drive us to acheive in life, even so-called "bad" emotions like hate, anger, fear, jealousy and the desire to compensate for our shortcomings, and so on. These things provide just as much motivation to acheive in life as do so-called "good" emotions like love, joy, etc. IT's all a matter of how you use them.
