"On December 21 2012 I'm jumping off a mountain"

"I sincerely believe that on WS2012@11:11 a cosmic portal will materialize in Sedona Arizona. Based upon synchronistic experiences and intuitive information downloads - which I will explain in more detail in the coming months on this web site - I am convinced that I must attempt a 'leap of faith' from the top of Bell Rock at that moment. My ultimate purpose will be to use that 'doorway' to access the center of the galaxy and the source of our cosmic computer program." - Peter A. Gersten.

One way to make yourself famous, I guess. Pity he won't be around to enjoy it.

Seems he's a UFO nut as well.

Didn't you see this coming? Whenever someone makes a prediction of imminent apocalypse, you get suicides like this. Wasn't there some teenage girl who killed herself when she heard about the LHC doomsday predictions?

Anyway, here's another story we can add to the list of answers to the "What's the harm with believing in woo?" question. Part of me kind of hopes he will jump, but that's terrible. Especially if he inspires more people to join him.

I was thinking of notifying the What's the Harm website about this, but it hasn't happened yet. Likewise the Darwin Awards.

It is an unneccesary death and that is sad to me. Even if its a lunatic that dies. Perhaps more so. Thats all I am saying, not that its surprising.

I totally agree, Humanzee. It's very sad, and I hope someone stops him. But you have to laugh, or you'd cry.

Whew! I thought you were writing that in the first person. I'm glad you haven't totally lost it for some unknown reason.

Poor guy. Hopefully writing about it ahead of time will lead to an intervention. It is a couple years off.

Thanks. I worried people might think that, even though I put the topic in quotation marks.

Yes, hopefully.

Surely, even though he's a woo and UFO nut, he knows someone who can put reasonable doubt in his mind that the portal or whatever is not going to catch him, even if they can't convince him there won't even be a portal.

I've been thinking of having a party on that date just to defy all the wooism. Maybe the media will pick up on this guy's stunt and it will be televised live. Man, that would be better than New Year's Eve Y2K!

IIRC, that area is managed by the US Forest Service. It won't surprise me if some ranger is there on that date to discourage any vortex-jumping idiocy.

I call shenanigans. No way will he do this.

But....

If he does, you gotta respect that devotion to a cause. Wait, it isn't really a cause, is it?

You gotta respect that devotion to a delusion.

Wouldn't it be weird if this turned out in his favor? Like if he was whisked away to some celestial portal and achieved some higher intelligence we can only dream of?

Do you think he's mentally ill?

The talk of intuitive information downloads, feeling he MUST leap off the rock, all the other bizarre stuff that would seem to indicate a serious break from reality.

Weird how hard it can be to tell the otherwise mentally well but overly imaginative New Ager from the seriously mentally ill.

Well, I want to know how much of a fall is it from the top of this rock to the nearest landing place. Maybe he'll leap off a 10 foot drop, expecting to pass through the cosmic portal. He'll probably walk away from that, maybe twist an ankle at worst. Now if the drop is 200 feet, the joke's on him.

Another thought; I hope he wears some sort of protective suit with an air supply for when he reaches the galactic center. Probably not a breathable atmosphere for humans at such a place. And what luck! The cosmic portal is going to be in Sedona, Arizona, and not, say, 50,000 light years from the middle of the IOK-1 galaxy...that would be inconvenient.

Is the end of the world progressive? Ie, does it take 24 hours moving from east to west? Or is it instant? If so, at what time UTC? I need to know so I can already plan it in iCal.

Sedona is one of the wooest places in the USA. Last year when we vacationed there was when a couple of people died in a sweat lodge. We took a jeep tour with a guide who was just nuts. For example, he took us to a "vortex site" and explained that a small tree was leaning a bit because of the vortex energy. *snort*

So the problem is that this guy is going to get a lot of support for his craziness.

That's a heck of a lot of words, and individually they appear to be English...

synchronistic experiences
intuitive information downloads
source of our cosmic computer program

Is he trying to create a new English language?

And, more importantly, is this enough proof to have him committed as a potentially dangerous schizophrenic?

I found this video of him talking (from 2007 or earlier).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32f9PsI33BQ

At 3 min 20 he says one of his synchronicities is that someone sent him an email telling him that the Winter Solstice is exactly 11:11 UT on that date.

But according to this, Winter Solstice is actually 11:12 UT.

Oh, dear. Will he miss it by THAT much?

No, he's got the calculation perfectly right. He jumps at 11:11 and goes splat at 11:12

Reminds me of this:

Jason Nesmith What? What was that?
Alexander Dane Uh, nothing.
Jason Nesmith I heard some squealing or something.
Gwen DeMarco Oh, no. Everything's fine.
Teb But the animal is inside out.
Jason Nesmith: I heard that! It turned inside out?

Teb And it exploded.
Jason Nesmith Did I just hear that the animal turned inside out, and then is EXPLODED?

So if the portal is going to open as part of a 'computer program' or 'electromagnetic grid' or whatever other technobabble he is dribbling... why not just wait until it has opened, then jump.

Why does this require 'a leap of faith' at all?

This guy won't do it. He'll get bored between now and then and focus on some other stupid new age nonsense.
