Can one be any MORE clueless?
Actually seen on Usenet some years ago:
"Why is everyone so excited about [movie] Lord of The Rings? The characters are complete sterotypes, they could be right out of Player's Handbook!" |

Well, I'm sure I've read a news story at some point about a petition to rename The Two Towers, because it was harmful to name a movie that way to cash in on 9/11
Yup http://www.houseofplum.com/plumcrazy...es/000324.html Some people really ARE that clueless |

Actually, as someone who has played both WoW and WAR, I'd say the dumb gang are those who dismiss it that superficially based on just hearsay of half the story. Yes, while Blizzard doesn't even make a secret that they got the orcs and whatnot ideas from Games Workshop, that's not what WAR is accused of copying from WoW.
There are game mechanics copied that were not in the board game at all, and even classes changed to be far less like the tabletop units and more like basically Blizzard's cash cow. E.g., if someone were to point out that, say, squig herders are a copy of WoW's hunter, pointing out that they got it from their own board game would actually be the dumb answer. The board game squig herders don't actually do the things they do in the online game. In fact, they don't even actually do much more than be accessories to the squigs, in the board game. E.g., making the White Lion class a pet class is basically another such deviation. In the board game the White Lion guards are people who killed a white lion in hand to hand combat and wear its pelt as a sign of courage. They're not people who tame one and use it as a combat pet, like in the online game. E.g., there is no such thing in the board game as the combo points that work exactly like on the WoW rogue. E.g., there is no such thing in the board game as a rider on a Disc Of Tzeentch that wears only cloth to be like the standard MMO mages. Etc. Now a case may be made that those are more generic MMO tropes and don't necessarily come via WoW. But dismissing the complaint as on par with the LOTR one just tells me that someone is in a rush to shoot their mouth without even understanding what's actually being discussed. |

Hmm, I have never heard anyone deny that WAR copied many of the mechanical aspects of WoW. That was sort of a given and a rather common situation in an MMO if it wants to be successful. The complaint about WAR I came across was that it copied the thematic and story elements of WoW, as among the circles I have experience in it was assumed that a fair amount of mechanics and roles would be copied if it was going to be an MMO. I never got into either and only played WoW briefly so my experience with the complaints were largely secondary.

The Penny Arcade joke plays on the fact that some of the younger and more vocal players of WoW claimed that WAR 'stole' a lot of the fantasy elements, without knowing (or bothering to look up) that Warhammer was older and used its own miniature models for the graphics. But since all fantasy borrows from tolkien to a greater or lesser degree.. meh

WOW (2004) is a Phantasy Star Online (2000) clone anyway. They didn't even rip it off first, that honor goes to Final Fantasy XI Online (2002).
Then again it's not like the first Warcraft games (nothing like WOW) were original at all either.... (Yes I'm trolling for EverQuest fanboys.) |

Is this true? I heard that the film The Madness Of King George III didn't do to well in the States because people thought that they'd missed the first two?

I always thought they're pulling a Lucas and starting with episode 3. They'll probably release George I and II as prequels

I'd say they did a fine job of keeping it borderline Poe, but if you make it all the way to 42, "Too many characters to keep track of. The dwarf was clearly only there as a token dwarf character to sell tickets to lucrative movie-going dwarf demographic. Lose him." I'd say you can't get a much clearer indication that it's a parody. I mean, geesh, the only way to make it more blatant would be to talk about the elf or orc demographic.

It was such bad form for them to name their movie "the two towers" so soon after 9/11.

The British version was called 'The Madness of George III', since every Brit can recognize the name of a King by the fact that there's a number after his name. They felt that Americans ought to have the fact that George was a King specified, and dropped the number to keep the title form getting too long.
At least, that's the most reasonable version I've heard. |

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the "George I and II" movies explanation is a myth.
George III is one of the few kings most Americans would actually have heard of, thanks to the Revolution and stuff. Henry VIII because of the wives, and Richard and John because of Robin Hood. Elizabeth rounds out the picture because of being picturesque. Bloody Mary because of the drink, although most Americans will confuse her with Mary Queen of Scots. |
