On a related note, I saw this woman reading while driving on Lake Shore Drive one morning earlier this month. It's hard to see, but she had a book on her steering wheel.

Idiot...

So what did the cop say?

i'm glad to see that the cop was doing a good job.
it is better to bust you for being a hazard on the road, than hassling some kid for smoking a joint.

texting while driving is a bonehead thing to do.

I see people reading newspapers, putting on make-up, shaving, doing their nails, etc. quite regularly and I'm only in busy traffic for about 10 minutes where I actually notice what the other drivers are doing. The weirdest thing was a guy actually making a sandwich while driving, at 7:30 in the morning!

Bah, that's nothing. I got pulled over 7 weeks ago because I was 34 over the limit.

Only 2 more weeks until I'm allowed to drive again (got a one month suspension for it).

For people playing with cellphones while attempting to drive I favour the simple solution; take the phone off them and smash it into little pieces.
For repeat offenders make them eat the pieces.

The thing that annoys me is that they allow phone use with a hand's-free kit when that is almost as dangerous as using a handheld one. Its the distraction to the driver's attention that is the more of a problem than holding something in his hand.

If I was a traffic officer, I would maker text/phone drivers lives an absolute nightmare. I would write you up for the maximum every time.

People who engage in such stupid activities whilst driving have no idea about road safety, defensive driving and in general are selfish morons.

Just my 2c worth

Until it's also illegal to hold a banana to my ear and talk to myself, I consider laws against cellphone use in a car stupid.

If you ban hands-free devices, then conversation with passengers should similarly be banned.

No, studies show that talking to someone on the phone is far more distracting than talking to someone who is actually present. And it doesn't matter whether or not you use a hands-free device.

Maybe if you're one of those people who has to turn to look at the person you're talking to. I was behind a driver doing that yesterday. He kept turning to face his passenger--and drifting out of his lane when doing so. Unless he's deaf and needs to lip-read, wtf? I can talk to people without facing them.

I've noticed the worst cell-phone drivers are the ones who gesticulate to the person they're talking to, who can't even see them. Those people are in another world.

And a passenger can scream in terror giving you warning when they see that you've drifted to the oncoming lane and are about to be killed by the truck heading directly toward you. Someone on the other end of the phone conversation won't see the accident you're about to cause.
