12 reasons gay marriage will ruin society

Here's a satirical page that sarcastically makes a lot of the same points we've discussed here about gay marriage.

http://grove.ufl.edu/~ggsa/gaymarriage.html

Quote:
# Homosexuality is not natural, much like eyeglasses, polyester, and birth control are not natural.

# Heterosexual marriages are valid because they produce children. Infertile couples and old people cannot get legally married because the world needs more children.

# Obviously gay parents will raise gay children because straight parents only raise straight children.

# Straight marriage will be less meaningful, since Britney Spears's 55-hour just-for-fun marriage was meaningful.

# Heterosexual marriage has been around for a long time, and it hasn't changed at all: women are property, Blacks can't marry Whites, and divorce is illegal.

# Gay marriage should be decided by the people, not the courts, because the majority-elected legislatures, not courts, have historically protected the rights of minorities.

# Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are always imposed on the entire country. That's why we only have one religion in America.

# Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people makes you tall.

# Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage license.

# Children can never succeed without both male and female role models at home. That's why single parents are forbidden to raise children.

# Gay marriage will change the foundation of society. Heterosexual marriage has been around for a long time, and we could never adapt to new social norms because we haven't adapted to cars or longer lifespans.

# Civil unions, providing most of the same benefits as marriage with a different name are better, because a "separate but equal" institution is always constitutional. Separate schools for African-Americans worked just as well as separate marriages will for gays & lesbians.

You can make fun of it all you like, Silicon. But all sorts of crazy stuff is happening because marriage is redefined beyond recognition:
Trucker Marries Self.

If separate but equal never works then why do we have gender specific bathrooms?

I kinda tire of the gay marriage comparisons to the 60's civil rights movement. Its not like the marriage laws were specifcally written out of spite for the gays. I havent seen watercannons turned on any gay marriage rallies. I didnt see Rosie ODonnel beaten with billyclubs as she came out of City Hall the other day.

Yeah, but a good heckling might have been nice.

The worst part of the gay marriage thing is that it puts Rosie O'Donnel's obnoxious mug on my TV screen. Hopefully, the issue will be settled soon so gay people can marry and I can not see horrors of the deep on CNN every day.

Lol!

I've a friend who used to be a long-haul truck driver. Keeping two log books is common but highly illegal. If a trucker can keep two or more illegal books in such a way that one of them will satisfy an inspector at any given time, keeping two books legally should be a snap.

They forgot the one where the gates of hell open up and demons fly out and torture everyone, and God does nothing because we really, really pissed him off this time.

So what makes you think they work?

I think they are, otherwise they wouldn't make a difference for same sex and different sex couples.

So the legitimacy of a political movement depends on how harsh the government wants to suppress it?

The major difference between the 60's and now is that the group fighting for rights now is fighting for a different set of rights. The 60's were about jobs and segregation. Blacks were already allowed to marry, but they weren't free to eat at whatever restaurant they chose. So to fight segregation, you go and sit where you aren't supposed to. A black guy in a "no blacks" section is pretty obvious. Instant "point made."

The movement now is for something far more limited and for a less identifiable population (You say two people of the same sex holding hands = gay couple? I point you to the middle east where it is common for men to walk down the street hand in hand while having a conversation and to Korea, where women will walk hand in hand or arm in arm for the same reason.) While desegregation was something that automatically benefited blacks, marriage is something that not everybody does or wants.

While a lot of the opposition in the 60's was from people who thought something was being taken from them (i.e., a competitive edge or the right not to associate with people they thought inferior) nobody's thinks they're losing anything. That's why you get flood rhetoric instead of water cannons. Opponents know there's no real harm in the thing.

Those ignorant of history are doomed to repeat it.

You really think jackboot, billyclub tactics haven't been used against gays?

You need to have a memory of the gay rights movement that goes back longer than just the run of Will & Grace.

Quote:
Though some black civil rights leaders huff and puff to repudiate any resemblance between their struggle and the gay-rights movement, the similarities seem hard to deny. Homosexuals faced legal discrimination and Jim Crow-style laws: As recently as 1967, the New York State Liquor Authority forbade bars to serve homosexuals, and one of the first activist campaigns in 1969 sought to "integrate" a Los Angeles restaurant (Barney's Beanery) that displayed a "Fagots [sic] Stay Out" sign. Police harassment was a constant feature of gay life, and a sex arrest often meant the end of a job or a career. (This problem is not yet solved. In Texas a year ago, two men were arrested for having sex at home.) In 1977, citing Leviticus, the Ku Klux Klan called for the execution of all homosexuals.

Particularly in the 1970s, gay churches were burned by arsonists, rebuilt, burned again. In 1973, 32 people died when an arsonist torched the UpStairs bar in New Orleans; one man who survived was notified on his hospital bed that he had been fired from his job as a schoolteacher. There was, and is, a drumbeat of violence, which is a sort of terrorism.

Quote:
A unique example of gay-bashing occurred on September 22, 2001. Ronald Gay entered a gay bar in Roanoke, Virginia, opened fire on the patrons, killing Danny Overstreet and injuring six others. Ronald said he was angry over what his name now meant, and deeply upset that three of his sons had changed their surname. He claimed that he had been told by God to find and kill homosexuals, describing himself as a "Christian Soldier working for my Lord".

Gay-bashing is occasionally committed against heterosexuals who are only perceived to be gay. Two prominent incidents include:

* Actor and comedian Norm MacDonald (of Saturday Night Live) was attacked by two men in New York City. They thought he was homosexual because he was well dressed, with styled hair, and lanky; he was walking through Greenwich Village, an area popular amongst homosexuals. He suffered a concussion.
* A man was shot to death in an Iowa bar because he was standing quietly in a corner holding a purse. He was perceived as an unwelcome homosexual; in actuality, he was holding the purse for his wife, who was in the restroom.

Quote:
"Queer bashing" - Stonewall (1996)
A national survey of hate crimes against lesbians and gay men published in 1996. Stonewall asked over 4,000 lesbians, gay men and bisexuals about their experience of homophobic violence, harassment and verbal abuse during 1991-1996.

Summary of findings

Violence
34% of men responding and 23% of women responding had experienced violence because they were gay, lesbian or bisexual. 18% of male respondents, and 10% of female respondents, had been "hit, punched or kicked". 10% of male respondents, and 4% of female respondents, had been "beaten up". 5% of men, and 2% of women, had been "assaulted with a weapon".

And we can look at the millions of dollars the City of Chicago has had to pay out in lawsuits because of police attacks on homosexuals. This stuff is happening, even if you choose to turn a blind eye, TMY.

Quote:
Amnesty International is calling for urgent action by the authorities, following reports that officers from the Chicago Police Department subjected two men to severe homophobic, and in one case racist, abuse and torture, in separate incidents last year. The cases are among a series of incidents involving alleged brutality or torture by Chicago police officers in recent years.
