Rep. Giffords Shot In Tucson

My mother called me a few minutes ago from the area in Tucson and said there was a massive amount of police, helicopters, and ambulances. She wanted to know if I had heard anything. Then on the radio I heard that Rep. Giffords was giving a talk and a gunman walked up and began shooting. Between 5 and 6 people shot.

So far all I can find on the web are tweets. Not much detail on this. I hope that she and her staff are alright.

Giffords in a Dem from CD8. My district. She just ran her third successful campaign for congress beating Jesse Kelly....I think. News is breaking as I type this.

Semi auto pistol
7 shot
2 dead unconfirmed
Giffords definitely shot
Holding a "congress on the corner event"

Most stories are quoting one on NPR. The scariest is the Tuscon Citizen saying she was shot point-blank in the head but the site has apprently crashed so all you see is the lede on google:

Quote:
08, 2011, under Headline news US Congresswoman Gabby Giffords from Tucson has just been shot point blank in the head on the north side of Tucson.
Google Search (top link)

More news. Giffords shot. As many as 12 people transported to hospital. Injuries unknown.

Her latest campaign was quite nasty here. There are people who believe she is a socialist/commie and the such. Lots of very negative hit adds regarding her and her family. Most of the ads were paid for by money from outside Arizona. Her and Grijalva both had intense (successful) campaigns against tea party backed candidates.

ETA - Fox news AZ says the gunman is in custody! Yea!

Just heard a bystander tackled the gunman! Good to see someone kept their head on their shoulder to prevent his escape. This is going to be an interesting day here in Tucson.

I don't pray so forgive the wording but my prayers are with those victims.

Abortion or immigration?

I'm betting in addition to old fashioned "Crazy," one of those is going to be the big issue.

As always, we need to wait for more information, but given the tone of the country, especially the last election, I'm surprised something like this didn't happen earlier.

This is a tragic event that we can only hope will be isolated.

I just hope it wasn't some bat-**** Mexican guy. That racial component would overwhelm any subtlety to the issue and lead to one hell of a backlash.

No one is jumping to a conclusion, just offering speculation. It's possible this guy is some disgruntled leftist or, as someone else mentioned, this could be completely personal. We'll find out soon enough. There's just nothing else to do but wonder right now.

The political component to this is obvious. IT was an assassination. No matter who perpetrated the event, whatever broad political group this nut assigns himself to will be unjustly slandered.

I think we can all agree that hyperbolic ********* about "communism" and "destroying America" and whatever else gets hurled around cannot help.

New update. Sheriff's office has confirmed that Giffords and 6 others are dead. This is awful.

Suspect in custody described as in his late teens or early 20's

Apparently she was on Sarah Palin's "list" about health care.
Quote:
In a website launched on Thursday, the six-month anniversary of the health care law, Palin puts a bull's-eye on 20 House districts under a headline that reads, "We've diagnosed the problem…Help us prescribe the solution."

Included among Palin's Democratic targets: North Dakota's at-large Rep. Earl Pomeroy, Southeast Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and Virginia Rep. Tom Perriello.

Anybody nearby know any more details on this sad event?

Fascinating, how Gifford's target is now gone. You can go to the map and move over the targets, and get a name.

And the list of candidates is no longer available.

Sarah Palin, you are a real bitch. I hope you are happy with what's been done.

rifle scopes.....targeting politicians you don't like. is this NOT encitement to assault/murder? sure looks that way to me.

and why the **** is this map even still up????????????????????

NPR says 6 people died.

I went to hear Patty Murray here in WA and I was shocked frankly at how easy it would have been to do something similar. Murray was 20 feet away and no one was even monitoring who walked in the door. This was only a matter of time given the right wing and Tea Party rhetoric. Even if this was a psychotic schizophrenic and not an idiot who took the right wing lies to heart, it's going to a big shock if the rhetoric is not behind this.
