CNN, Fair and Balanced, "The Far Right Speaks"

Watching the Egypt stuff on CNN ATM.

"Here in the US, the influential conservative movement has its say on what's happening in Egypt. Up next, we're heading live to the CPAC convention in Washington -- what they have to say about the uprising just might surprise you, so stick around."

Headline at the bottom of the screen, "The Far Right Speaks". Umm, this is basically the Republicans, including some of the Tea Party impetus, that just took control of the House of Representatives.

I now leave the field open for snarky comments and responses.

Well, they were going to talk to folks at CPAC, where Ron Paul gets ovations and won the 2008 presidential straw poll, so I think they may have a right to use that moniker...depending on who they interviewed....

Far Right and Far Left can both be difficult concepts to peg down. It certainly changes. I am unaware of CPAC being supportive of a centrist positions in general. In 2010 the closing speaker was Glen Beck who spoke about the disease of Progessivism and was sponsored by the John Birch Society. Of course, that year and this year included sponsorship by GOProud which I think is generally not considered Far Right since they are more fiscal conservatives than social conservatives. Previous years were very supportive of Mitt Romney and John McCain who are generally considered moderate conservatives. Some of its traditional supporters are breaking ties claiming it is becoming more Libertarian instead of pure Conservative.

I suspect it probably changes with the general trends of the major conservative movements. The Republican Party has had a general shift further right in recent years. Younger conservatives appear to have a generally libertarian (movement, not party) bent.

Though I generally think of Far right as just meaning staunchly conservative, clearly not moderate or centrist. Extreme right and radical right have different connotations in my mind. So perhaps I am looking at it differently than is the usual, and far right is supposed to mean extreme right.

Who is "far-left"? Who is a "left-wing extremist"? Who is an "arch ultra left-winger"?

Does the bird have one wing?

I consider myself both "far left" and very "new, new left".
By today's standards, I'm both a civil libertarian extremist and an economic leftist. And I think anyone who believes the two are incompatible is a fool.
I'm also anti-Bernanke and his neoliberal policies.

Well, he is not a violent extremist, but a few of his ideas like that capitalism is inherently evil and should be abolished are on the extreme side.

I am a social democrat so in the US I am far left. His concept is extreme in most any country. Maybe not Cuba. China does allow investment and profit though. So does Venezuela.

Now I like a lot of Michael Moore's ideas but a few of them do hit the extreme. Most of rhetoric is about getting others to think rather than hard and fast proposals, as he says he is a film maker not an economist.

I believe I would take his condemnation of capitalism more seriously if he weren't quite so rich from making movies for profit.

No doubt he also supports the overturned laws banning corporate political speech for all corporations except media corporations, largely his buddies who say things he likes.

I find it difficult to believe that anyone would take Michael Moore seriously, about almost anything.

I'm not sure, however, if that means that the OP is implying that JBS isn't far right, or if the far-right now represents something to the right of the JBS, or something else entirely. It doesn't matter, CNN should know better than to editorialize in any fashion.

Star Parker has a column at Townhall now saying that "Gay Conservative" is an oxymoron. I disagree. But, she's entitled to be anti-gay if she wants.
