The Joys of Tennessee...

Quote:
Rhea County is one of the most conservative counties in Tennessee. It holds an annual festival commemorating the 1925 trial at which John T. Scopes was convicted of teaching evolution. The verdict was thrown out on a technicality.

Ok advertising yourself as a plage village I can understand but this is getting silly. Is there some kind of time warp in the area?

I often wonder.

If you want to be
a hillbilly
tell you it ain't hard

Just get yourself
some old beer cans
sling 'em round the yard

get yourself and old
pickup truck
pull the engine out

hang it up
from an old oak tree
let the oil run out

takin' it easy
takin' it slow
don't want to know nothing
I don't want to know

don't want to be nothing
I don't want to be
don't want to see nothing
I don't want to see.

Lyrics from a song a guy I knew years ago wrote. (I can't even remember his name now, damn. Sam something)

Somehow it seemed appropriate.

So, are they celebrating the conviction of the teacher, or the fact the case was thrown out? Maybe they're celebrating the birth of evolutionary teaching?

Shyeah.

I'll bet a lot of Nobel prize winners come out of that place.

Probably, but why would they want to visit it in the first place?

I've recommended the book "Trials of the Monkey" before on this site. It's written by a great (great great? great great great?) grandson of Darwin, who went down to that town to cover this celebration. I think it is a book that would be interesting to most JREFers, as in the book he covers about every topic we cover on these boards, including yes, the GP child stuff, along with religion, personal freedoms, atheist married to a christian, genetics, and the kind of doublethink that goes on in Fundamentalism.

amend state law so the county can charge homosexuals with crimes against nature.
Wow, “Crimes Against Nature”, you don’t hear that one often, except in readings of homosexual history (specifically the chapters covering the middle ages). What an odd concept, “Crimes Against Nature”.

This quote speaks volumes:

Quote:
“We need to keep them out of here," Fugate said.
Yes Commissioner Fugate , you must keep them out; they aren’t born there, they aren’t your kids, siblings and so on. They are from scary places, like San Francisco and New York, and they desperately want to get into Rhea county, you know, to promote communism and hand out pornography to minors at a booth during your strawberry festival...

Makes me wonder, do the homosexuals of Rhea county really need more incentive to pack their bags? I think such a law would be old news to the gay and lesbian folks who are unfortunate enough to have to live there.

Speaking of lyrics, it reminds me of a Nick Cave song, “God is in the House” (http://www.lyricattack.com/n/nickcav...uselyrics.html).

Anyway, from here on, whenever I think I’ve got it bad in my town, I’ll just remember Rhea County. Thanks SFG .

That didn't last very long.

Tennessee county beats hasty retreat from call to ban homosexuals

Have a little more faith in the system, folks.
