Resident Skeptic (My Next Skeptical Endeavor)

I was most of the way through composing one of my War and Peace-length posts announcing what I am about to do when My Better Half sent the following email to many of our friends and relations, saying it all in far fewer words:

Quote:
Hi there Everybody.

Robert has reached a new phase of his work as a 'skeptic.' Since about 2001, he has been joining message boards and chat rooms online which support various aspects of the paranormal in an attempt to discover what makes a 'believer' believe. He has been 'bridging the gap' between belief and skepticism with kindness and respect, which has earned him the trust of many believers, even though they know he doesn't agree with them. Some have dubbed him 'the nice skeptic' or 'the respectful skeptic.' He found an online radio station called Para-X and has ingratiated himself into their community of psychics, ghost hunters and the like. He has been interviewed on a few shows on the station in the last several weeks. Due to his winning style of discussion, he has been given a time slot on the station - a station devoted to the paranormal - in which to do a show about his skepticism on various paranormal topics. It's called The Resident Skeptic, and it airs on Saturdays at 7pm Eastern time, which is 4pm Pacific, for one hour, beginning March 5th, 2011.

Click on the link below to listen to the show, or whatever show is on at the time of your visit. When the page and chat room load, scroll down the list on the left side of the page and click on the link Resident Skeptic to see the info page about the show.

http://para-x.com/live.html

The owner of the station, and guy who gave Robert the time slot, said he thought the show would become enough of a hit that it may even get picked up by their 'parent' station, CBS Radio. That remains to be seen. But this is indeed a new phase of his outreach efforts to find common ground with believers for the purpose of discussions about the paranormal. Hope you have the chance to give a listen.

Much love, Susan
I had her add the following, in hopes of preventing anyone from beating me to announce it here:

Quote:
He is working on an announcement to the skeptical community, where he expects some nay-sayers, but mostly a great deal of support.
This is that announcement.

This is just terrific.

We're hobnobbing with a media star, gang!!!

Are you going to have guests and such - can you get that other bearded curmudgeon to watch his tongue and do a few segments?

(Now, we need someone to archive the shows for me. I tried and can't tune that link/station from over here.)

Congratulations, Robert.

Good stuff, Robert. I'll be listening.

Btw, just noticed Susan's email says your show, "Resident Skeptic", doesn't begin until March 5; while the Para-X schedule says it starts tomorrow (Feb 26 @ 7 PM ET). Is there an episode tomorrow?

Thanks, FMW! I'm considering asking various well-known Skeptics to be guests on the show, Randi among them. I'll need to get a few shows without guests under my belt before I bring guests into the mix, though.

I believe - but am not certain - that the shows will be archived. The rest of the Para-X shows seem to be. I will find out!

Sorry for any confusion, blo-bru. The first show is March 5th, allowing Robert a week to prepare. I guess the schedule was submitted prior to this agreement.

Great to see! Pls post the archive link when it goes up. Maybe they'll let you release it as a podcast on itunes so we can get them automatically.

That's great. I've always believed paranormal thinkers had zero tolerance for skeptics. Your kind, respectful and gentle approach has paid dividends.

I'll be listening. Best of luck.

I was about to ask - is there a podcast version? I'd subscribe!

No nay saying here, and trust me if there was nay saying to be done i would be doing it, i have a low tolerance for selling out to get exposure.

But that is not what your doing rob, awesome job. You got your own radio show, as someone who loves working with that medium, and still feels it has a certain " punch" i say good job.

Oh! How many of these shows have you listened to? Perhaps you could enlighten us with your vast experience.

Sorry. I just had to get sarcastic this morning, and you being the only real "nay-sayer" so far, I pounced on you.

I am not an expert on this subject, but I would venture to say that there is no way of knowing how this show will be received because I believe this show sets a precedent. Judging by how well Robert has been received in their chat room, I think the show will do well. Knowing Robert's style of discussion or 'argument,' if you will, I see this one-hour show becoming a sort-of "the hour of respectful disagreement." And, knowing Robert's skills with debate, he just might give folks a bit to ponder, another way to look at things, get them to question what they believe. That, I believe, is always healthy.

thanks! If it does get archived, it will most likely be on the station's "On Demand" page, which I believe is www.para-x.com/demand.html, If that doesn't bring up the page, go to www.para-x.com.com and click on "on Demand" in the menu at top. you would then have to scroll down through the alphabetic list of shows to where "Resident Skeptic" will be, and pick the episode to hear or download. As far as Podcasting the shows, I spoke briefly with my show's producer this morning, and he said he knows how to do that. dunno if it will be in place by the first episode, though.

While the show failing is of course a possibility, I doubt that my being "effective" will play into it. i have received nothing but support from the station owner/manager, other hosts, and the "rank and file" in the chat room. I have no reason to believe that, as long as my show is interesting,
I would be "canned" for being too effective.

well, not sure the first episode will be much more than me defining skepticism, and discussing the believer/skeptic dynamic.

I think you should have Claus Flodin Larsen as the first guest on your Resident Skeptic show! He's polite.

Para-x recently did a bit on local piece of **** ( i refuse to refer to him as anything else.) robbie thomas.

You should try and bring him back for an encore, knowing everyone he knows, i could even give you a list taller than i am ( which isn't that tall, but big for a list.) of direct lies the man has told. And i am not talking harmless stuff, i am talking things ranging from harassment of a murder victim's family, to claiming a local special effects artist was a police officer.

'hatter, I had never heard of Thomas until a few days ago, I asked the host of another Para-X show if she had ever heard of the web site "Stop Sylvia Browne." She said "yes, and "Stop Robbie Thomas too." Is that your site, 'hatter?
