One has to wonder if there isn't more to this story...

The sing was banned because a parent reportedly complained about it being by Freddy? It doesn't say it actually was banned because of that. The school appears to have had no problem with it at other events. Funny that it was allowed back if they removed the lines about killing a man, could that have been the problem in the first place but it got blow out of all proportions based on rumour? Afterall...

"Mama, I just killed a man,
Put a gun up to his head,
pulled the trigger,
now he's dead."

is probably not something that would be considered appropriate in a school graduation considering the US issues with guns and schools.

One wonders if they would have banned Johnny Cash: I shot a man in Reno just to see him die.

I suspect there's a lot of things mixed up in this story. I doubt they've banned the now ubiquitous chants involving songs by Queen -- like we are the Champions -- at sportting events.

They can sing it now, albeit without the killing lyrics.

Here's a link to a local news site about this, dated May 9: http://www.frontiersman.com/articles...2219524721.txt

Quote:
“The whole thing was just ridiculous,” senior Rachel Clark said Monday. “They’d played the song on the school intercom and we played it at prom. It’s a great song and the choir was really excited to be singing it. And the senior class felt like it defined them.”

...Clark said it didn’t make sense for the school district to tout tolerance for all and then turn around and allow homophobia to dictate something such as graduation music.

“We were joking about singing Elton John’s ‘Candle in the Wind,’ instead,” Clark said. “I guess no matter what you do, someone’s feathers are going to get ruffled.”

The main export too, it would seem.

One wonders how extensive the stupidity mine there is. They certainly appear to have a penchant for digging deeper.

What better way to celebrate your transition into adulthood than by having something censored so your virgin ears don't hear it.

Johnny Cash totally stole that song, but surprisingly not from REO Speedwagon.

An absurd belief contrary to sexological data, it must be added.

Well if you can read that link without this happening they actually link to some news articles where they talk about that.

Heh, yeah. Those tropes are a pet peeve of mine. Even L&O SVU (in the the tv realm) virtually never acknowledges bisexuals. Either some victim/suspect is gay or straight, and nothing inbetween! Don't even know if that show has ever uttered the word "bisexual".

It seems that large chunks of both the gay and straight communities don't like to acknowledge Bis. Not sure why, perhaps 'in between' people seem to upset the sense of certainty people like to have about sexual identity.

I think you have found the head of the long metal fastener thingy with the heavy metal hitty thingy.

A lot of people seem to be of the belief that sexual orientation is something formed before birth and is unchangable there after. The scientific evidence disagrees.

While most people are clustered about the ends of the spectrum (either totally or almost totally attracted to just males, or to just females,) there are a lot of people in the middle that are attracted more to one sex than the other, but still able to be attracted to both. There are people that tend to slide up and down the spectrum too. One study noted that many women tend to move towards the female attraction end as they get older (probably cause they get sick of males if you ask me.)

This sort of thing is quite unpopular in certain circles though as it undermines certain arguments.

Personally I think it's time everyone got their noses out of everyone else's bedrooms and just paid attention to their own. If someone wants to have an orgy with members of the same sex, the other sex, their sister, brother, and a consenting chimp who states the understanding and desire to be involved via sign language, who the heck are we to say no?
