'Expelled' Production Company Bankrupt

It must be part of the mean old scientists conspiracy.

Now to buy the footage and "fix" it. Ben Stein, you should RUN!

You know i laugh if only for the awkward conversation that i had to go through when buying expelled... ( for obvious riffing purposes, i forget if our riff on it is on youtube or no.)

" Oh, i see your buying expelled."

" Yep, it was free with 2 good movies. "

" Yeah, it is a good film, brings up some really good points, have you seen it yet?"

" Nope, didn't want to pay money for it. "

" Yeah movies can be expensive, i hear you, ben stein is great though isn't he, fighting against big science?"

" Not really."

" Sometimes it is hard, you should see the experts they have in this movie, they really know their stuff."

" **sigh** Listen, i am buying this movie because me and my friends like to get really poor movies , especially of a scientific nature, and make fun of them. We are buying it to ridicule it."

" He does get a lot of ridicule doesn't he? Well hope you enjoy it."

( that was slightly paraphrased, but a very accurate summation of events. Regardless of what i said, she reacted as if i said something positive about the film. It instantly aggravated me for some reason, leading to my blunt explanation of the reason i was buying it. )

Ferris Bueller's school had a pretty messed-up faculty, if you think about it. Ben Stein for a teacher, and Jefferey Jones as a principal who creeps around and breaks & enters the homes of students.

Expelled is OK to watch, provided you do so in the proper context.

Yeah, turn the sound down and put "Dark Side of the Moon" on.

I just started a campaign on www.thepoint.com to raise funds for bidding on Expelled: No Intelligence Required.

http://www.thepoint.com/campaigns/campaign-0-2756.

If I happen to win the auction, I'll be removing the film from the market in its original state, and will take suggestions on what to do with it. I'm thinking about re-editing the footage to provide rebuttals and ridicule...

Pledge money if you can, and I'll place bids on the movie over the next few days, as the funding pledges roll in. If we don't win the auction, you won't be charged a single penny, so don't worry about that.

This may not be legal. Two men tried to buy Pabst Brewing Company (brewers of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer) through a Facebook campaign similar to this one, and it was shut-down by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Story in the Chicago Tribune here:
Pabst beer and Facebook don't mix, says SEC

The difference is, I'm not promising to give anyone shares in the holdings, which is where these guys went wrong.

Either way, we'll see what happens.

There are also other reasons that I personally would find cause to not place a bid in this:
1) You advertise to "purchase the rights" but you are not clear on who will end up with the rights to the movie
2) You don't disclose any information about the company or what holding the rights entails to (will it be just for this movie or will it be other financial holdings within the company?)
3) You don't set a goal on how much money you expect will be necessary for obtaining the right and winning the bid

Though it wasn't really a flop by the box office standards of a documentary, Expelled never took off with its target audience. Skeptics gave the movie more press than creationists ever did.

I guess most of the anti-evolution base are happy with their VeggieTales videos. Expelled needed more dodgy CGI and musical numbers to ever have a chance.
