Fred Phelps is coming to my town

Thats right - He is coming this Friday to protest at the funeral service of one of those boys killed in that chopper crash the other week.

I will be attending so I'm interested if there are any personal messages of encouragement or otherwise you would like passed on to the this fine upstanding American?

A large diameter post administered per anum would be my suggestion . It should have the words "Darwin forever, fundies never! Go Gays!!" woodburned into it by a consortium
of Greek Sailors (Thanks, and a tip of the fuelair hat to the author of The Greek Sailor and a number of it's reviewers).

My suggestion: Put together a flash mob. Have half show up as trekkies, the other half as star wars fans. Get them to argue and be vocal. Basically, the idea is to draw attention away from the phelpsers. The worst thing you can do to those people is upstage them and cause them to be ignored and forgotten.

That doesn't mean we should leave him alone.

I have to admit that I am torn between utterly ignoring him or having parties and counter-protests that drown him out.

What ever you don't do - don't attack him or his critters - they make their livings by suing people that they can incite to attack.

Horrible, evil creatures. More evidence that there is no god.

Ca-ching. it is all about the Benjamins. No exposure in the media is bad exposure for a preacher or a tv star who can get a bigger audience.

There is a chance he does not believe himself and is only looking for a book deal or get paid to go on a tour.

Putting food on the table and paying the bills is a motavating factor.

I think the whole Phelps problem could be solved by giving the honor guard a couple of live rounds each.

I totally agree with you - all kidding aside I am going just to get between him and those paying their respects. I have been cautioning everyone I speak to. No matter what happens, dont physically react.

The town is pretty fired up about this, but I hope cool heads will prevail. The Freedom riders are going to be there and they've had a lot of experience with this sort of situation. With luck the town will take its lead from their actions

He wants to ruin the day for people.

Pay your respects, enjoy the company of each other, cover up the foul stench of the Phelps clan with some joy and fellowship, and shun the bastards.

I've seen them up close in action - my .02 is that their intention is to provoke a violent reaction from the public in order sue.

Let the PGR take care of them.

Or a bunch of helium balloons (even though we are running short of it), though I'm having trouble imagining rafts of balloons that fit into the funeral scene well...

Isn't there a bridge we can stick him under?

While waiting for weather to clear in the Newark airport once I came up with a solution. I was in a bar near a gate where a large number Asian male prostitutes and Puerto Rican street queens were going to board a flight. I'm not sure where they were going but I assume it was a somewhere in desperate need of more Asian male prostitutes and Puerto Rican street queens. After probably having one too many drinks I came up with the idea of paying this people to stalk Fred Phelps. If he stops protesting funerals then he'll stop hearing "hey baby I got what you want right here" every time he goes to check his mail.

I have reposted this before, but this is my favorite response to the Phelps nonsense.

The centerpiece of the counterprotest on site would be this huge counter thing showing the amount made so far, displayed so it would be easily readable by both the bigots and any cameras around.

I guess the rest of the counterprotest would just be people pointing and laughing.

Whatever you do, if you go there, have a good time and don't get angry. Do something fun or silly, preferably something you enjoy and they condemn. Wear mixed fiber drag, eat shellfish, have a beer. Arrange a gender-bender squaredance.

What Scrut said. This guy came to my area, and we were going to do a counter-protest, but the local preachers were ahead of us: they were ignored, the media didn't show up, and they haven't been back since.

Then he sues the crap out of the assaulters.

I would suggest, keep away from him and just ignore him.

They fund their church by suing people that take action like this.

Yeah, but some people might be able to sue them for defamation of character sometime.

The best thing to do is to ignore them. If God were to exist, I'm sure he'd hate attention-whore-mongering.

A common misconception. Sure, they've won a few suits, a few thousand here and there, but not nearly enough to fund the expenses of this place. It mostly comes from the majority of them having jobs, several of them as attorneys.

In Wichita the media has stopped covering and/or talking about Phelps. When they show a military funeral they focus on the Patriot Guard and the people lining the streets.
Just get as many people as you can to ignore Phelps and everything will be fine. Maybe donate to a local AIDS group in his name.

Can it be secretly canceled or delayed? Seriously, I would. And I would hire some Chippendale dancers to go out and perform for them.

Why hasn't anyone else thought of this?

Riddicule them a few times and see how that goes down.

False dichotomy.

Completely ignore him and his cronies, AND have a great party to celebrate the lives of our fallen warriors.
