A friend of mine helped build the stage for one of their concerts. He said it was quite a spectacle.

These guys are an embarassment to German music. Mostly the ONLY German rock band people know internationally, and then I have to explain that no, vocals like a 300-pound bullfrog and lyrics like an emo-kid x Rambo hybrid are neither representative nor particularly valued at home. But whatever sells, I guess :|

Am I the only one who, when I hear "German heavy metal band", thinks "Neo-Nazi skinheads"?

Yeah, you probably are. Hard to shake prejudices, isn't it? They are neither Neo-Nazi's, skinheads, nor heavy metal. So you've got one out four correct. You know who is a German heavy-metal band? The Scorpions. Ever hear Winds of change? Not really a Neo-nazi anthem, is it?
These guys have had to deal with that kind of prejudice since they started. Stupid criticism like that from Floyt doesn't help much either.

Even having taken four years of German in high school, (20+ years ago) I can only catch about 1/4 of what they're saying, but it rocks!

I think plenty of people have heard of Scorpions. Perhaps you meant only band singing in German?

So what would you prefer? I like a lot of German music, and I must say it tends to be 'harsh' especially when using German vocals. Rammstein, Feindflug, Das Ich. German music I like which is softer tends to use English vocals, like most artists on the !K7 label and the various Rainer Trüby projects. There are some exceptions: De-Phazz occasionally use German vocals, Einstürzende can occasionally be softer, and this is a very nice Japanese tune by Fantastic Plastic Machine with soft male German vocals. :-)

When I went on a roadtrip through the southwest US last year, my young friend bought one of their CDs.

I was a bit dubious about it before he started playing it.

I really liked it. Have it on my laptop now. Very happy memories of driving through the desert listening to it.

I heard a story that they couldn't play in the UK because their show contravened the health and safety laws due to their pyrotechnics. They do seem to like fire quite a lot!

(and yes, I do have all their albums. They rock!)

I was under the impression the band members are licenced pyrotechnicians? Though under the UK stringent wrapped in cotton wool Health and Safety laws, perhaps Till's toenails were too long or something equally ridiculous.

Bumping this thread again, because I was at their concert last night, THAT was a great show. With only knowing some of the lyrics to a couple of the songs, I was entertained the whole time.

Years ago I read an interview with Edgar Froese. He said that one of Tangerine Dream's (vinyl) albums had been mastered backwards and released in Sweden. Nobody noticed until one of the band heard a copy.

Last song in particular is pretty much explicitly anti-nazi, too. Germans can be sensitive about that stuff.

Rammstein is not my style of music but the fans seem to really like them. The singer could proabaly fart into the microphone and the fans would cheer.
