Video software recommendation
I'm looking for a recommendation for (free) movie-making software. I have around 1000 jpg files, all the same size, and am looking to stitch these together into a movie (of sorts) in avi or similar format at a rate of 5-10 frames per second.
Someone suggested Windows Movie Maker, but that wasn't really doing it for me. Anyone have any alternative recommendations? |

Check out the latest version of Premiere Elements (9 or 10, I think). If you've bought a video camera of some sort recently, MOST come with a "free" copy. It gives you about 85% of the "full" version of Premiere without requiring a supercharged system to run it on. Primarily, what you'll be missing is some of the more esoteric color-correction abilities and the ability to author more complex-menued DVD's. Because you're working with JPEGs, the time to render peak files should be nonexistent. I expect you'll spend more time doing transitions, scaling and moving images in the screen, etc.

If all you want is a slideshow, you don't really need video editing software. Windows Live Photo Gallery may be all you need.

Google Picassa3 is perfect for this
It does a "Ken Burns" effect (pan and zoom) that really rocks. I use it often and I have about $3000 worth of editing software that I use everyday |

Unfortunately, Picasa appears to have a minimum frame time of 1 second. At 5-10 frames per second, I need a minimum frame time of 0.1s.
Maybe I could have explained my needs better. I have generated about 1000 colour 'maps' of the UK showing a spatial variation in a calculated variable -- very like a weather map showing temperature variation. I would like to join these into an animated sequence (at quite a rate, as I have one thousand to get through), that shows the evolution in my calculated variable over time, and then save that as an .avi or .wmv file or similar. There is no need for zooms, or fancy transitions between frames, as all are the same size and may be overlaid over each other exactly. |

Here's another one you can try:
http://makeavi.sourceforge.net/ It seems to allow a faster frame rate. ETA: Quicktime will also do it (select "Open Image Sequence..." from the File menu), but you need the Pro (i.e., not free) version. The software above is free, however. |
