Email addresses.

I move quite a bit, and was thinking of getting an email address that is still practical, in that I can have large files sent to me and don't have to use a web interface to access. Something along the lines of Manfred@Richthoffen.com(or .mail, or whatever), but with my real name, Herman Von Braunsweiger.

Anybody done this? What are the costs? Does just about every ISP allow for use of such an address? While in the process of moving, will emails to that address just bounce?

Sounds like what you want is an inexpensive web hosting service where you can have your own domain seperate from your ISP. I use 1and1.com. Register a domain (Braunsweiger.com or whatever) for $5.99/yr. For $4.99/mo. you get 50 POP3 mailboxes, 100 email aliases, virus scanning, 500MB of webspace, and 5GB/mo. bandwidth, and more. I've been using this service since November 2003 and they're quite reliable. Of course, there are hundreds of other hosts with different plans but 1and1.com is a very good value, IMHO.

Dang, I used to get banner ads for someplace that offered "email@yourname.com" or something similar. Who would have thought a banner ad would actually be useful for something?

I had one of those once, a free one. Then one day my friend told me that his surname was being sold off by the company, so I checked and mine was for sale too. Another friend runs a one-man hosting service so I asked him to sort it all out for me, and now I have all the control I need over the emails and webspace.

gmail aka google email promise you 1 gb of email storage at the moment for beta testers.

If you don;t mind the emails be scanned so they can pop up ads to you that is.

but it is a web-based interface.
