The best Skeptical Songs?
I figure this might be fun:
Skeptical Songs Please share a song (ideally one found on YouTube) which reveals a skeptical attitude, or somehow features the "skeptic ethos". To better explain, I'll get the party started: "Cosmik Debris" by the immortal Frank Zappa
Since not everyone loves the Zappa as much as me, here's another example that I'm pretty sure everyone loves: "Superstition" by the awe-inspiring Stevie Wonder
Hopefully the "writings on the wall" and y'all can see what I'm going for. Let's boogie. |

Stripped, Raped and Strangled by Cannibal Corpse.
Not much in the way of fairytale thinking here. A man goes on a murdering spree in which he rapes, kills and rapes lots of women, gets away with it and has no fear of cosmic justice catching up with him. It'll make a sweet campfire song at one of Dawking's Quest Camps, no doubt. ![]()

Great thread topic. I'm surprised I haven't thought about this topic for my own lyrics. The closest I ever got was a song about being stardust ala Sagan.

A couple good ones concerning god.
Superstition is a great one. If I may play devil's advocate, here's another great Wonder track which is not so skeptical:
He's got some amazing music, although I lost interest in his work (for the most part) after 1980. |

The Axis of Awesome do a song called 'What would Jesus Do?'
Apologies if it's been mentioned already. Mor votes for Mr Minchin. 'Peace Anthem for Palestine' probably doesn't fit the bill, but makes me laugh. |

Two off the last Rush album, Snakes & Arrows.
Faithless
I've got my own moral compass to steer by A guiding star beats a spirit in the sky And all the preaching voices - Empty vessels ring so loud As they move among the crowd Fools and thieves are well disguised In the temple and market place Like a stone in the river Against the floods of spring I will quietly resist Like the willows in the wind Or the cliffs along the ocean I will quietly resist I don't have faith in faith I don't believe in belief You can call me faithless I still cling to hope And I believe in love And that's faith enough for me I've got my own spirit level for balance To tell if my choice is leaning up or down And all the shouting voices Try to throw me off my course Some by sermon, some by force Fools and thieves are dangerous In the temple and market place Like a forest bows to winter Beneath the deep white silence I will quietly resist Like a flower in the desert That only blooms at night I will quietly resist The Way The Wind Blows
Now it's come to this It's like we're back in the Dark Ages From the Middle East to the Middle West It's a world of superstition Now it's come to this Wide-eyed armies of the faithful From the Middle East to the Middle West Pray, and pass the ammunition So many people think that way You gotta watch what you say To them and them, and others too Who don't seem to see to things the way you do We can only grow the way the wind blows on a bare and weathered shore We can only bow to the here and now In our elemental war We can only go the way the wind blows We can only bow to the here and now Or be broken down blow by blow Now it's come to this Hollow speeches of mass deception From the Middle East to the Middle West Like crusaders in a holy alliance Now it's come to this Like we're back in the dark ages From the Middle East to the Middle West It's a plague that resists all science It seems to leave them partly blind And they leave no child behind While evil spirits haunt their sleep While shepherds bless and count their sheep Like the solitary pine On a bare wind blasted shore We can only grow the way the wind blows |

The God that Failed by Metallica. It's about the failures of faith healing, inspired by Hetfield's mother's death from cancer and her refusal to get medical treatment because "God will take care of it."

So awesome that someone else knows this guy in 2012. I remember listening to him on "Saturday Night Special" on AM radio with my parents in the 70s.
The first several dozen times I heard it, I thought that the Black Keys' "Gold on the Ceiling" was anti-religious. I was imagining some commentary on ornate churches and hearing "ain't no GOD in my house." "Gold On The Ceiling"

Don't forget the brilliant MC Hawking. He's basically this guy who decided to answer the question that nobody had asked: what would it be like if Stephen Hawking were a gangsta rapper?
Definitely NSFW.Entropy:
Best line: "The earth's not a closed system' it's powered by the sun, so f**k the damn creationists, Doomsday get my gun!" What We Need More of Is Science:
And yes, Stephen Hawking has heard of him, and approves.
