Art

Art - That is a broad category, I know. I am trying to find reproductions of some good art for my walls. Paintings, Photography, Landscapes, Famous Places, etc. I'm being vague I know, which simply means I've not even been able to decide on a particular category. So, I come asking for ideas. Is there any one web site where a person can perhaps find a good, wide selection of works of art (reproductions, of course) to frame and hang on living room walls? I have spent weeks at one particular site but I'm just not finding anything.

Thank you. Hazel

I got a copy of Monet's "Sunrise Impression" from these people years ago.

Thank you, Delvo. I'll take a look. If I can just come up with the center one that I really like, I can probably finish then.

Old movie posters (or reproductions thereof) can be neat wall art.

I suggest a trip to your local hardware store, and for a few bucks pick up a couple of cans of spray-paint.
That way, you can put whatever art you wish on your walls.

Why are you primarily interested in reproductions? Do you not trust your own opinion? I hope that doesn't sound rude, I'm just curious.

Thank you all. I'll browse ARC today. As for opinions, I'm going in circles. That's why I wanted to hear from others for a change. See what you all know. I know better what I don't like (most impressionist) than what I do.

I've got four Hiroshige prints on the walls of my office. I'm also particular to Bruegel's Landscape with the Fall of Icarus, The Tower of Babel and The Wedding Dance; William-Adolphe Bouguereau's The Young Shepherdess; and Remedios Varo's Embroidering the Earth’s Mantle, just off the top of my head.

No one can tell you want to like, though I'm with you on the Impressionists. Except for Van Gogh most of them don't do anything for me.

Another place to check out is deviantART. Sturgeon's law definitely applies but what is good there is often fantastic. You might have to dig some to find something that really grabs you, but there is a lot more range in style, subject and emotion than on stodgy sites like ARC, plus you can look at stuff that reflect cultural values and tastes that aren't more than a hundred years old and primarily European.

On a similar subject I have been wanting some astronomical prints for my home. I would like to decorate the hall with two or three planets and possibly get a nebula for over the couch.

Does anyone know a nice, reasonably priced source for such prints? Most of the sources I have found charge hundreds of dollars for a poster sized print. I appreciate good quality but that seems a bit high.

You also might want to visit your local art museum. Yes, they are pricier than most, but the proceeds go to the museum.

Go to Amazon, enter the artist you want and the words "art reproductions". It will bring up what Amazon has directly AND others who sell repros of that and (usually) other artists. Big time saver (for me, anyway)*

* Other than purchasing a lot through them, I have no financial interest in Amazon. And I don't make money for sending people - though I seem to remember you can go to them through JREF and JREF gets a small amount.....

That's a great site. I'd pay to see the ABBA movie.

Btw, the google arts project is a great way to browse different galleries and see what you like.

Thank you for the suggestions. I don't think I've ever heard of any of those particular ones. The only Bruegel I have seen I don't care for but that doesn't mean I might not like another. I will try to find some of those.

I've found too many that I like but almost none that I really "had to have". One that I was all set to use turned out to be too large for comfort. 40 to 42 inches, depending on how you frame it. It was a lovely sepia and I thought I'd do a sepia wall but guess I changed my mind.

I like your thought about values and tastes that aren't more than a hundred years old and primarily European. I took a brief course in art appreciation and that is exactly what it was. Even then, 80% French and 10% Italian.

The day begins. Hazel

You know, I just noticed your location. There's a shop I've been to in St Louis that has a lot of very cool stuff. You might want to stop by, if you don't find anything you'll certainly get some ideas.

That's interesting. I'm not sure where Shaw Gardens is but I'll find out. With everything else, I'm not sure it will have a large art selection but no harm in looking. Thanks.

I hope their merchandise is better than their website! Did I wake up in 1997 this morning?

It took a while to figure it out, for sure. And I'm afraid that isn't the kind of art I want. There might be some interesting things to see in there, though but not the art or pottery, judging from what's on their web site. Wonder if those dogs are for real.

I've not yet found a good art store in St Louis area. That doesn't mean there aren't any here; just that I've not found them. The art museum had a photograph I'd have liked but no way to sneak it out of there.

Definitely not a place to visit if you know what you're looking for, but excellent if you don't know what you looking for and find suddenly that a pewter pig with rhinestone eyes is exactly what you need.

The dogs are real, there were four last time I was in. Also a couple of cats.

Have you been to any art fairs or gallerys? Not sure what kind of money you have, but I've bought several nicely framed photos from artists for a few hundred dollars each.

In movies, a Nagel painting is usually on the bedroom wall.

We used to have great art fairs on Country Club Plaza in Kansas City. I've not heard of any here but I'll bet there are. I've checked in on a couple of galleries. Both seemed to specialize in type of art they sell. One specializes in handling new artists. That's nice but it's all abstract art. At least all I've seen on his web site is abstract.

In a few days I'll be at our Saint Louis Art Museum and I intend to ask some questions there.

Arrrrrgh. I've just spent about ten minutes trying to think of a pub I've been to that's right near that place. I think it's O'Connell's.

Hazel, I know there are some galleries in Clayton, but they're probably pretty pricey. Art fair season should be starting up pretty soon. I don't know if this at all. Does anyone know when Taste of the Central West End is (or whatever it's called now)?
