Sure, in the hands of an expert driver, they are extremely fast around the track but I don't pretend that I am Michael Schumacher. The nannies are now mandatory. I might buy a next gen Viper.
The first gen. Viper was ***** and everyone knew it. Come on, a V10 high performance vehicle that had a longer 60-0 stopping distance than the Dodge Caravan. Yeah, that's a good idea!

But that's North American manufacturers. Look at what happened with the Pontiac Fiero. Design it with a 4 banger, but before it comes out, Toyota debuts the MR2 so Pontiac throws a V6 with way more horsepower in as an option... but doesn't improve the brakes for the bigger, more powerful engine!

Then you look at Mazda's RX7. Redesigned with a 1.3 litre rotary to go after the best Corvette Chevy had to offer. Did they succeed? Well, 0-60, no. They were .2 seconds slower but put the two on a track and the Corvette was like a dinosaur.

Of course, the Cobra didn't have those problem. It did everything as well, or better, than its competitors. It was the Veyron of its day.

I don't really care what American car makers did 20-30 years ago. I care about what they do today. And today they make very good performance cars. The Corvette ZR1 is faster than the European competition and significantly cheaper. Ditto, probably, for the new Viper. The Cadillac CTS-V, which I drive is, I think, better all around than the European competition and it is significantly cheaper. The Mustang and the Camaro are both very good.

The Cobra just a big engine in a really small car. Of course it was fast. And of course it could handle well. But you had to really know what you were doing otherwise it could all be over. The Veyron is a technological marvel and any idiot (with a lot of money) can drive one really fast.

Dark Lord, just wanted to say I love the CTS-V. Great car that destroys the competition for the price. I've got a Z06 as well which is a nice car but I've been seriously thinking about the V as more of a family car.

How fast does your family like to go? How many Gs do they like to pull in the bends?

ETA: I'm looking at a couple of low mileage C5 Z06s for weekend stuff, but the kid's college funds are getting low.

WTF are you doing in this thread then?

By the same token, I don't really care what my grandma drives these days.

Funny, that's what all the losers said about the Cobra in its day. "Any idiot with money can drive that really fast!" Of course, they were driving hot rodded family sedans at the time.

Tough that you don't like the cars Shelby built. They were always the top for their time and anyone who owned or drove one usually loved them.

And the population is aging. (Beats the alternative!)

This is why full autopilots are a great idea and will be mandatory in a few years.

My family likes to go fast. My z06 has a lateral g-meter in the HUD...

Anyway I would go for a C6 over a C5 any day. In fact I would take a C6 coupe over a C5 Z06. And yes, I've driven all of these cars extensively (on my third vette).

So...you will pass on the ride-along in a Superformance Cobra (Corvette front and rear suspension) with the all-aluminum 500ci (8.2 litre) 700+HP engine, then? A dude from Missouri will be putting ~2000 miles on his in a couple weeks. He has close to 25,000 miles on it, including some roadcourse days. He also confirms it will run 10-second 1/4 mile times, through the mufflers, on street tires (not DOT drag tires, GY Blue Streaks) and pump gas.

Given the wrong (or right) touch on the gas, it will get sideways at 80MPH.

I suspect you will also pass on riding in the '32 Ford with the 815ci 1200HP Boss motor, then? It will haul...Frank Currie ran it 205MPH at Bonneville.

Are you talking about the "Hot Rod Power Tour" by chance?

Don't have the jing for a C6 Z. Maybe a coupe.

I would go for a C6 coupe of a C5 Z06 any day.

The C5 was a wonderful car. The C6 takes that car and files off all of the rough edges to make something truly superior. I drove a C5 for almost 5 years before switching to a C6 and it's the little things that make a difference. Bottom line go for the C6.

I test drove a C6 on lunch today. That was an evil suggestion.

2006, so LS2, 12,000 on the clock; 3lt, mag ride etc, but auto with paddles.

Really fun, night and day more civilized than a C5. 35,000 out the door which for a dealer isn't a bad price.

Other than the auto, I really, really liked it.

I dug the mag ride when I had it. The z06 has a pretty harsh ride in comparison. Now mag ride is available in the z06 carbon, oh well.

I'm sure you can do better than 35k. Although that is fairly low mileage. Heck I have almost 30k miles on my 2009 z06. I drive it a lot including on road trips etc.

I'm really starting to lust after the new f12 berlinetta.

I was a little put off at first glance, probably because I think the 458 is pure sex and art, but 730 horses helps, and almost every Ferrari wins me over.

Well, except the Mondial.

I once saw a Shelby GT 500! It's the only one I've ever seen, that was thirty years ago, and it was in Norway...

Go figure

A guy Power Toured in a legit GT500KR (glovebox door signed by Shelby) a few years back. Coolest Long Hauler, however, remains the dude that Long Hauled with a LEGIT 4-speed Hemi GTX convertible.

I wish. I've never down a long haul, but I have drove 'legs' of the tour in the past. I've missed a few here and there over the years, but if it passes within reasonable striking distance of St. Louis, I'll make at least one stop. I think the last one I went to was Springfield, IL a few years ago. Let's take this over to the gearhead thread and quit cluttering Carroll's tribute with non-Shelby talk.

In case anyone is interested, there is a great multi-part bio program on the Velocity channel honoring Carroll Shelby - well worth watching, lots of great interviews with his employees and co-conspirators.
