Mermaids

It would appear that the esteemed Animal Planet Channel is now taking on the "science" and "existence" of "marine primates" in their upcoming new series titled "Mermaids: Body Found" on Sunday evening at 9pm (EST).

Yes.. webbed fingers, superior breath control. no body hair for streamlined swimming, dolphin herding, special fatty tissue building for warmth, and plenty of fine healthy seafood for substinence !

This somehow sounds vaguely familiar ?

I tried to post a link to it.. but you know me ? All thumbs... Animalplanet.com and Mermaids.

Edit: If someone would be kind and/or interested enough to post a link I would appreciate it ?

ETA: This seems to be typical for most of the links I can find on it. For example...

What if there’s a kernel of truth that lives beneath the legend of the mythic mermaid? Now, …Animal Planet brings viewers into the world where the legend is real. The film blends real-life events and phenomena with the story of two scientists who testify they found the remains of a never-before-identified sea creature.
http://doubtfulnews.com/2012/05/anim...-a-body-found/

I notice that the mermaid depicted has long head hair. This would completely negate the "no body hair for streamlined swimming" bit. Imagine the drag from all that long scalp hair!

ETAA:

There's a Wikipedia entry as well...

Hmm, Wikipedia calls it a "mockumentary". The first reference listed calls it a "fake documentary", but complains that it doesn't reveal the fakery till the end, and has a lot of misleading information that may confuse people who don't recognize that the whole thing is BS.

I dunno. If it were presented as an actual documentary, I would certainly be outraged. If it were a full-on mockumentary, making obvious fun of all the footers and other cryptozoology nuts, I'd be overjoyed. As it is, I'm not sure what to think.

Just copy the URL from your address bar while viewing the site and paste it into the post. The site automatically wraps [url] tags around them when you click on SUBMIT REPLY or PREVIEW POST if you haven't already done that (unless you've unchecked the Automatically parse links in text button in the additional options box). You don't have to use the link button or do anything special.

Maybe... I'm just guessing here... your trouble might be because of using the link button. The link button automatically puts http:// in the field for you. If you're pasting the URL after this instead of over this you end up with an URL that begins with http://http://www instead of http://www.

I'd say don't use the link button to post links, make sure there's a space before and after the URL, and make sure the URL starts with http://www. and you'll be okay.

Before seeing above that it's a mockumentary, I was thinking it might have been a sensationalist look at the not-very-good aquatic ape idea.

Animal Planet already did the inserting mythical creatures instead of animals into their scripted shows years ago:

well there is a kernel of truth, or the mythology wouldn't exist, but they seem to have neglected it here yet again
Maybe they should just relabel all the docu channels "Ripley's" and save us all arguing about it

There is an aquatic ape as relative of man theory. I guess it might be possible for a humans to evolve into a water species but like the program stated the "mermaid" would not be pretty to humans living on land at all. Interesting but ugly like a manatee or dugon.

There are just too many sightings and too many worldwide indigenous peoples legends to discount the existence of mermaids. Look how many sunken ships have never been found - and those are stationary. Mermaids don't want to be found. The ocean wilderness is far larger than land, and we know less about the ocean than we do about the moon. We don't even know where the largest whales on earth breed.

I have a confidential report of one being kept at a Monestary in Thailand, and I am looking for donations for an expedition to verify the report. PM me for Western Union details.

it would take several million years. we as a species have been around for around 200,000 years, so no it would not be possible for a human to evolve into a water species, not in the time up til now anyway, and as mermaids are known to have been invented for mythological purposes, your point is moot

I would feel better wiring you cash if I knew you were going to be staying someplace more um.. "mermaidy" on this important expedition ? Say.. like that fake Disney Island place in the Bahamas, ABP ?

Also, when you get one can those that helped to fund the Expediton be there for the "rehydration " of the flipper(s) ?

Heh...I actually dove into reading this thread because the title reminded me of the movie "Cabin in the Woods" which I thought was pretty funny! There was a merman mentioned in there, and it looks pretty much like how you say it would, AttorneyTom! Fatty tissue, not pretty at all, but you forgot the part where it can lift it's "butt?" and spray poison. Or...at least that's what I think it did in the movie... LOL

We haven't had cable TV for several years now, and boy do I miss those "guilty pleasure" programs! Seriously! I even miss those stupid ghost hunting programs.

So, I'll have to watch this online. Even tho IMDB gave it a 3.5, it can't be THAT bad. Can it?

I am thinking that the "Mermaids" and yes... let us not leave out the "Mermen" are a bit different since they herd porposes instead of coyote and of course when "they" do that the porposes jump up in the air to communicate with us "Land People" on behalf of the "Merpeople" to "say".. "Hey, our friends the Merpeople have sent us to tell you that they are really nice and would like to get to know you better !"

Now I was unaware of the poison spray gland, Minarvia ! That really complicates things...

Listen, strange women lyin' in ponds distributin' swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

Couldn't resist.

This show is Finding Bigfoot in hyper mode. One assumption to another in 10 minutes or less.

I feel bad for myself that had to watch it ?!

Hope noone else had to do it.

Yet... on the other hand.

These folks actually used some known biology to present their farce.. something new ?

I am trying to think of those.... hmm..

1. Whales migrate.
2. There was a "whale kill' in that year and time.
3. There was some sort of a sonar development thing going on during #2 by the United States from what I read in the local mainstream media....
4.Sharks will eat rays and will also ingest their barbs.
5.Marine mammals do exist .

I must be missing something... but ?
