Arecibo space message, crop circle answer?
Ok so one of the bigfooters around here, pointed me to this. i was aware of the Binary message we sent out from arecibo in 1974. What i was not aware of is the fact that some are claiming that the message was answered, in the form of a crop circle in 1991 (I think I'm remembering that correctly)
Pretty good discription of his woo explanation, Pretty Lame, and he dismissed the very ervidence of hoax - even as he points it out http://www.cropcircleresearch.com/articles/arecibo.html I did a quick search and couldn't find anything on this here. maybe it was old news by the time this forum popped up, but anyonwe know anything about this? anyone ever stand up and take responsibnility for hoaxing this? Interesting hoax, thanks.
Maybe I'm missing something, but why would aliens who had received a radio signal from Arecibo, reply with crop circles in Hampshire? Wouldn't they have replied with a message sent by radio? My guess is that a group of physics students, who know about the original signal from Arecibo, decided to have a laugh by faking a reply. |

Hey I know that place, ooohh wooo
yanno there's a radioastronomical observatory adjacent to the crop circle site, Chilbolton observatory is the largest radiotelescope in the UK, maybe the aliens were aiming at that, perhaps you could ask one of the many radioastronomy personnel or their students that frequent the area, if they know any of these mystery physics students of yours This following picture shows the students I'm talking about really exist in the real world, here is a picture of them standing outside the radiotelescope, actually in the crop circle itself, on the morning that the crop circle was first reported, by them to the press, it was awfully lucky that they were there really, they had been staying nearby the previous night, like at the observatory coincidentally, where they are studying radioastronomy stuff, ![]() I have at this time not ascertained if these radioastronomy people who were involved in the discovery knew anything about "the original signal from Arecibo" BUT I think I have successfully proven that your mystery physics students do not answer any of the questions, one of the things I know about this which is truly unexplainable is that the observatory has cctv cameras which cover the area, yet when they were examined they were found to be mysteriously wiped clean woooohhhhh ![]() hehe |

I don't believe that in 2001 Chilbolton was working in radioastronomy - it was pretty much purely meteorological I think. Also, the largest radiotelescope at the time would have been the Lovell telescope at Jodrell Bank (assuming you aren't linking individual telescopes into an array - in which case it would be MERLIN, which includes telescopes at Jodrell Bank but not Chilbolton).
Recently Chilbolton began hosting a LOFAR station (which I'm proud to say I helped do some manual labour building). LOFAR is properly huge, but spreads across Europe, mostly being in the Netherlands. The Chilbolton station is in total area (combining high and low band arrays) larger than the Lovell, but each individual part of the array is very small. The big dish in the picture in that thread is CAMRa, a meteorological radar and not a telescope. |

The press seemed to think it was a radio telescope when it opened in 1967.

I think the big dish at Chilbolton started off that way but got repurposed in the 70s or 80s.

So there are aliens hanging out less than 17 light years away, they have the technology to travel in space undetected, but the only way they can think of to reply to a message is by drawing a crop circle?

Well seeing as how the aliens are limited to communicating through New Agers and not to scientists, maybe it's not so hard to understand why they had to resort to crop circles.

I would suggest that the aliens didn't visit earth, they just shot their crop sculpting particle accelerator machine from their own planet. Very worrying that they have such technology. What if they decided to ruffle all of our farmlands?
More than that though, the fact that they are replying to a miss print of the Aricibo message is proof positive that they are in possession of sufficient technology to read our books from afar. They're watching us. |

fundamentally I've still yet to see a crop circle that couldn't have been formed by pranksters with boards and too much time on their hands.

Fair enough. Would you accept astronomy, radio-astronomy or astrophysics students?
I would think it is quite likely that radio astronomers in the UK would have heard of the Arecibo message sent in 1974 during a ceremony to celebrate remodeling of the radio telescope. It wasn't exactly a secret. Students rarely answer questions, unless it involves beer or sex.
