What is the average size of a male rib cage?

Yeah, I can't seem to find any info on this - neither absolute nor relative to size.

For women, it's obviously commonplace.

Do you mean a chest measurement, like for fitting a suit? If so, it's about 40"/1m around. If you mean the size of a man's skeleton, stripped of flesh, I dunno.

Yeah, I was thinking something that measures "under" the breast, to reduce confusion from musculature or something. The best would be an MRI, of course...

I measure about 42" though I have a small bit of manboobs, but on the other hand sub-normal musculature. I've often been told I have a large ribcage.

That's pretty big if you're measuring under the chest muscles/manboobs. I get about 37" just under the chest muscles and am average height with fairly thin bone structure. I'm carrying a lot of muscle, but I don't think that matters much for this measurement - maybe an extra inch or two for lats.

Tubba, I'm 6'3" 43-45" ribcage, inhale/exhale. My chest expansion is not much, because I can't do lots of aerobics. I think normal is about 10%. Charts say I am obese, but they take no consideration for skeletal size. I've never been underwater weighed, but I know I sink like a rock in fresh water, so hard I bounce off the bottom of pools.

A couple systems make allowance for skeletal size. One uses calipers to measure something on the elbow. ( I just tried machinist calipers, 3 1/4" at widest bone, I think the those points are on the upper bone- humorus?) And the Zone diet charts use wrist circumference subtracted from waist to figure body fat %. My wrist is 8 1/2". 19" neck. I just checked the Zone chart, it says 25% body fat. Medicos say "Obese". By ONE pound. Yet I'm down about 80 from my peak. Pedants.

A good source of data can be found in MIL-STD-1472 Appendix B (ANTHROPOMETRIC REFERENCE VALUES).

Free to download, get the latest version (G). Search google.

I don't have a flexible tape measure handy to tell you my own dimensions.

Can I ask Tubba what he intends to do with this information?

Is he in conversation with God about creating a new Eve and wants to know which rib to give up to create a wife of the correct size?

I assumed he was just wondering if he was oddly-shaped.

aw man, now I am thinking about those ribs I barbecued over the weekend. Perfection. Nothing like a nice rack of ribs slow smoked for hours, and a cold beer.

OK, and NOW I am thinking some pretty psychotic things about TB's ribs.

Well for the reference I posted it would be American, which is a nice average from across the globe.

I think it was a subtle joke.

I was going to post the same question, but I highly doubt my response would've been as witty.

Thanks for the laugh.

This made me imagine a conversation in the Garden of Eden:

GOD: How do you like the woman I made you?
ADAM: Errm...Ah...
GOD: What is it? Spit it out, man!
ADAM: She's just...really small.
GOD: Well, what do you expect? She's made from a single rib!
ADAM: I know, I know...it's just that...
GOD: Would you rather I had used your hip bone?
ADAM: Well...
GOD: Let's see YOU make a godamm woman! Jesus H. Christ...(stomps off)
