Happy Hiroshima Day

Let's not overlook the anniversary of the start of the closing week of World War II

Actually, if you want to go by what was happening exactly 70 years ago, today (Aug. 7) was the invasion of Guadalcanal, marking the start of a long and bloody campaign for control of the island.

When I was stationed in Yokosuka a sailor decided he could get back to the States really quick by taking advantage of Hiroshima day. He went to downtown Tokyo, out side some train stations IIRC, and started throwing whole mushrooms at people.

Needless to say, he did get back to the States quick. He was then court-martialed and sentenced to several years in a Federal prison.

slight derail, but angrysoba, I've always been a bit curious about your demography. Your location is Osaka, Japan, but are you Japanese? Japanese American living in Japan? Anglo-American living in Japan?

I've always been curious, and since it's somewhat relevant to this thread, I thought I'd ask. Please don't answer if you don't want to disclose.

I was born on an RAF base in Lincoln to an Irish Catholic mother and an English Protestant father whose own lineage traces back through Ulster and Scotland, although he himself was born in Hamburg as his parents' occupation was, well, the occupation of Germany. I don't remember them ever celebrating any "Happy Hamburg Day" to celebrate the firebombing of the city or, in fact, any other kind of grotesque triumphalism. I realize, of course, that some people have no taste and are quite happy to gloat, rather smugly on the misery of others. And I realize that some people just like trolling. I expect the OP's thread title was motivated by the latter.
