Deadly Salt Gas

On the July 16th commentary, Randi cited John Kuharik as follows:
"For those who don't know, table salt (NaCl) has a melting temperature of approximately 1400°F, and a boiling temperature around 2600°F. There will be very little of "the element sodium chloride" going off into the air as a gas at 1200°F!"</p>


Then, on the 23rd, he cited Carl Fink as follows (I only cite the beginning for space reasons, do read the rest, though, it's excellent):
"Just in case people didn't know, the powder that doesn't dissolve when commercial salt is poured into water is not "sodium hydroxate" (no such thing — do they mean "hydroxide"?). It's silica. Commercial salt is mixed with a small amount of inert silicon dioxide powder to keep it flowing smoothly even when it absorbs some water...."</p>

Both are excellent comments, and I cannot criticize them, and I praize highly their knowledge.. Though... Sodium cloride is volatile (wery slightly) at room temperature, as any solid (vapor presure equilibria). I don't have my CRC at hand so I cannot state the v.p, but there is one. On the other hand, NaCl is captured in the seawater aerosol over the waves. There has been some concern (totally unwarranted, though), that the chlorine ions could then participate in the elimination of the ozone layer (won't work, as it is chlorine radicals, not ions, which do so). But: have you heard about the sickness called "Cretinism"? It manifests itself through goiter (thyrroid (sp?) gland enlargement), and severe mental retardation?
This sickness used to be common in the mountain zones of europe ("cretin des alpes" is still a slur on the vistims, or any guy you look down to) or in the central regions of the US, for instance. It is caused by the lack of iodine (that's why they iodize salt). Now Iodine has been leached out through geologic ages from most of the soil of the planet, and can only be found in high quantities in sea water, as NaI, sodium iodide (even higher boiling point), so that only the guys exposed from the "Deadly Salt Gasses" coming from the sea were able to develop a functional brain....
Now guys, this is not a flame! Please, rest assured of my profound respect for John and Carl's knowledge, and for Randi, to bring this topic to my attention. I am also impressed by the communications skills of you all, as compared to my rambling post.
Give me my "deadly Salt Gas" exposure everyday, please...

NaI abundence in sea products may or may not have helped humans get smart. IIRC a bigger concern is though to be the eating of fish and fish oils. who knows I wasn't around back then.

Sorry, Virgil, I lack effective commo. skills, as I said. I meant that sodium iodide is airborne, (and so is NaCl) either as vapor, or as aerosol. Won't reach the centers of continents, or high mountains..
