Ramifications of the "Awnald" bill

The "Awnald Bill" (which will allow naturalized American citizens be elected President after 20 years) is not necessarily a bad thing. A brief list of people who would then be eligible:

Former U.S. Secretary of State Madeline Albright

Former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger

Rocket Scientist Sergei Krushchev

Newsman Peter Jennings

Journalist Robert MacNeil

(And last, but not least)
Magician and Professional Skeptic James Randi

This will require a Constitutional Amendment. There is no way this will EVER be passed by the States.

Don't the states have to ratify a Constitutional Amendment?

I think it IS a bad thing because it attempts to amend the Constitution for short-term political reasons. Doubt that? Then amend the bill to grandfather OUT everyone now living and see how support falls like a rock.

BTW, as a Californian, I would assert that Ahnold is not all that much of a blessing. I wouldn't vote for him for Prez if he was qualified.

I agree it's pretty clear the Republicans would love to be able to have Schwarzenegger (it's really not al that hard to spell, folks...) on top of the ticket four or eight years from now. But it simply ain't gonna happen - there's no way a Constitutional amendment will get through the required 3/5 (or is it 2/3? I can't ever seem to remember) state legislatures while there's the remotest chance that Schwarzenegger (really, it's not that hard...) will qualify.

That having been said, I can't think of a good reason to prohibit someone who's been a citizen for twenty years from holding the office, and I'd favor it even if Schwarzenegger (S-C-H-W-A-R-Z-E-N-E-G-G-E-R) was "grandfathered out".

This issue has been around for years. Yet it was always the Republicans who were against it. Now they change their minds!

Yeah. That explains why Joe Lieberman has such a commanding lead in the polls over Bush.

It has? First I ever heard any serious mention of it. Guess I don't get out enough...

They were? When? What were the circumstances? Guess I don't get out enough...

Um, is it a good idea, in your opinion? If so, then why do you object?
