Gin and raisins for everybody!

Really though, aside from any political comments about health care plans, can nine gin soaked raisins a day help arthritis?

Quote:
Heinz Kerry ended with what she called “a highly effective” remedy for arthritis that drew laughter and some skepticism from the audience.

“You get some gin and get some white raisins — and only white raisins — and soak them in the gin for two weeks,” she said. “Then eat nine of the raisins a day.”

Despite the laughter, Dr. Steven Phillips, director of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Nevada quickly supported the prescription.

Phillips, on stage with Heinz Kerry as part of the panel, said sulfur and sulfides found in grapes are increased by the alcohol and could perhaps alleviate joint pain.

Dr. Michael Gerber, a noted homeopathic doctor in Reno, also said the formula has merit.

“It makes sense,” said Gerber from his office. “People go to hot springs to soak in the water and that water is very high in sulfur. So Mrs. Kerry’s remedy is pretty plausible.”

Dolores Jackson of Reno, a Kerry supporter who attended the rally, took the raisin and gin remedy seriously.

“There are really other remedies where we don’t have to use so many drugs,” Jackson said. “I really believe in alternative medicine.”

Aw, not this again.

About ten years ago or so, Paul Harvey talked about this "remedy" on his radio broadcasts almost every week. He got loads of testimonials from people who declared that it worked.

Ah, testimonials.

I can't remember Paul reading any letters that said, "I tried it, Mr. Harvey, and it didn't do a damn thing for me."

But Paul also said that some MD's were giving some serious study to the remedy. I do not recall any results of any such studies being reported, however.

Paul also read a few letters from folks who wanted more details about the remedy. In particular, some listeners wanted to know whether they were supposed to eat the raisins, drink the gin, or both.

Kerry Health Care? Bush was wrong. This goes far beyond HillaryCare.

I want Edwards to weigh in on the issue. He's in the medical profession, right?

On a possibly related note, a popular alchoholic beverage among those in the penal system is "raisin jack", a sort of wine made by fermenting raisins in some sort of container. (traditionally, a Bull Durham can)
Truly vile, by all accounts.

Anyone care to interview ex-cons for arthritis incidence?
