Why Darwin Matters, latest Skeptical Inquirer, and biography of Johnny Unitas. I'm always reading more than one thing.

"God is Not Great; how religion poisons everything" by Christopher Hitchens
"Coral: a pessimist in paradise" by Steve Jones - 'Jones is the Alan Bennett of science writing' (Financial Times) "My Young Years" by Arthur Rubinstein (more about wine, women and gourmet meals than music) "Paris Interiors" by Lisa Lovatt-Smith - see how artistic Parisians live (hint: they don't follow the style rules) - the photographs are luscious. |

Currently reading "Days of Infamy" by Harry Turtledove.
Which lead me to wonder why the Japanese didn't follow up with an invasion of Hawaii. Which led me to writing this spoof of the 9/11 Truth brigade:- http://jaycueaitch.wordpress.com/200...e-job/#more-24 I hope blog-pimping is allowed on this site!

The Pleasures of the Damned: Poems, 1951-1993 by Charles Bukowski. Checked it out of the library just yesterday. The exterior shows nothing but a picture of Bukowski's face. So here's a book you really can judge by its cover.
Yes, it's pretty gruesome: Buskowski's face, lying there on the table. But how many poets or other types of litterarties can make you laugh? |

Wyatt Earp: The Life Behind the Legend by Casey Tefertiller. I'm to the part, just after the shootout at the O.K. Corral, where the townspeople turn against the Earps during the trial.

The Last Witchfinder by James Morrow - one of the funniest novels I've read for a long time and of particular interest to sceptics. Also the only book I've ever read that purports to be narrated by another book, in this case Newton's Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy. A terrific read.

Just finished Freethinkers: A History of American Secularism by Susan Jacoby. I read it because it is one of the ten books that Sam Harris recommends at the end of Letter to a Christian Nation, which I read recently. I also just finished Plato and a Platypus Walk into a Bar...Understanding Philosophy Through Jokes by Thomas Cathcart & Daniel Klein. Now I've started Slicing Pizzas, Racing Turtles, and Further Adventures in Applied Mathematics by Robert B. Banks.

As one of my Xmas presents was a Satnav that also plays audible books, I have been listening to "The Count of Monte Cristo" on my drive to and from work every day. About 10 hours in (think it is about 50 odd in total!) and thoroughly enjoying it.
Would feel a bit strange saying I am "reading" the book though, which I know is bizarre as it is an unabridged translation so I am not missing anything. |

The Romance Reader by Pearl Abraham, a semi-autobiographical tale of a rebellious teen growing up in a rural American Hassidic community.
Monstrous Regiment by Terry Pratchett, a Discworld book. Not one of my favorites--I know the Discworld books are satires, but it's a touch too anvilicious even for a satire. |

Just finished good old J. Nickell's Looking for a Miracle. Hey, the choir likes a good sermon!
Now starting Ruggles of Red Gap. Humor too often goes stale with age, but not this 'un. |

I've just finished Matter by Iain M. Banks. I enjoyed it but thought the ending was a little weak.
I am now starting on Dark Heresy the RPG rules for playing in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. My enjoyment is only slightly spoiled by the fact that Games Workshop announced the closure of its RPG arm two days after the game's release. |

Snake Oil Science: The Truth about Complementary and Alternative Medicine, by R. Barker Bausell, Ph.D.
What if someone with impeccable academic credentials and years of experience in designing rigorous clinical trials turned this expertise toward CAM (complementary and alternative medicine)? What if this same person reviewed the controversial and contradictory literature of CAM for efficacy? What if this same person went the extra mile and helped to develop a credible placebo for, say, acupuncture? Find out answers to all 3 questions in this book, written by the former Research Director of a National Institutes of Health-funded Complementary and Alternative Medicine Specialized Research Center. If I had 10 hands, I'd give this book all 10 thumbs up. |

Just finished No Country for Old Men and Your Call is Important to Us: the Truth About Bull(rule8). First was excellent, though seeing the movie first did affect my visualization. The second was just ok, basically a book-length editorial, but it did put things into perspective regarding where my workplace fits in the grand scheme of things (I'm head of security at a call center).
Currently reading Sperm Wars, Robin Baker The 33 Strategies of War, Robert Greene and A Confederacy of Dunces, John Kennedy Toole. And a recommendation for the chick in acuity's avatar: http://www.amazon.com/Art-Shaving-My...1963377&sr=8-5 |
