Religious TV and radio shows
Am I the only one who listens to the religious shows on the radio or TV just for the humor value?

No, and not just for humor value.
I used to listen, when I had more access to a lot of religious woo woo talk radio. I sorta miss it as I don't keep up with the latest take on centuries old conspiracy theories on the web. I still watch D. James Kennedy and John Hagee - Fat Televangelist once in a while. |

It terrifies me to no end that i like a lot of christian rock, purely as music (as in, if I ignore the lyrics).
Kinda the same appreciation you might have for a good military march, or a videogame/movie soundtrack. Still makes me feel wierd... though there's a lot of music i love that everybody i know completely hates.

I watch Jack van Impe every now and then. I find it pretty funny how everything that happens in the world is in the bible and proves Jesus is on his way.

What made it funny was the fact that there were hundreds of people around and I may have been the only one who recognized him - a fact of which I am not proud, FYI. Oh, and if I may stoop to a rather low level, his wife's 80's porno hair is even bigger in real life than on TV. |

One of my friends family is really religious and one of his dads buddies actually spent his entire life savings, $250,000 or so, which was his retirement money, because Jack van Impe said the world would end and jesus would be here (or something like that). So he blew all his money and waited for the world to end. And this was around 1990. So maybe he is nervous about guys like that looking to rough him up. And welcome to the forum. |

Reverend Ernest Angley is my all time favorite, I like to watch the last bit of his show where he does the healings.
Here are a few choice quotes: CAST OUT YE DEMONS AND BE HEALED! Say BABY! Say JESUS! Say BABY! Say JESUS! What's your problem pops? |

religious tv
There is some weird guy with some sort of accent called Benny Hinn on channel three in the morinings before I pop in my work out tape. Sometimes I just get sucked in by the awfulness of it all. He is usually healing someone. This week he healed someone of arthritis and ovarian cancer! These people said he really cured them, and everyone was singing and the people always fall down and wiggle....
Then who is that woman who had Mary Kay explode on her face? She has BIG BIG BIG hair, and the eyeliner looks like it was put on with a Sharpie! My kids scream like it's the devil when she comes on. I keep joking I'm going to hire her to baby sit.... |

Benny Hinn is a personal hero of mine. Private jet, $4 million home...all for, essentially, nothing. The man's a genius. (Of course, if it turns out he really believes, and isn't just the scam artist I take him for, I lose all respect for the man.)
Also, I enjoy the Hammer religious show. I just wish he'd wear the pants. |

My personal favorite is Dr. Gene Scott, a guy who manages to broadcast on local UHF and seemingly 24hrs a day via shortwave radio! He's quite unlike the typical show preacher in leisure suit and patent leather.
Instead, he usually seems to ramble on for hours, sitting in a chair with a scraggly beard and dark sunglasses with the camera filling the TV screen with his giant head. I find there's a somewhat hypnotic allure to his preaching (which sometimes sounds more like a demented old man spinning a yarn). |

I'll tune into TBN every now and then and watch Hinn, Hagee, the pink-haired lady and the rest of the freakish menagerie.
I try to watch for the humor value, but if I watch too long I just end up getting seriously p*ssed off that these people are getting rich for what they do. |

Any non-religious person watching a religious show regularly, is not a non-religious person.

Such blithering idiots and cartoon harpies have been so ignored here in Oz that they are rarely on radio or television at all any more, mainstream or cable. Obviously we are harder to sell to!
We still have the "mainstream" preacher types roaming a TV stage on one (only one) lesser cable channel, but the screaming hairpieces come out only for a short time in the dead of Saturday nights, etc. Like vampires - how appropriate... And can anyone tell me of that Tammy Bakker woman is still about? I mean, is her face always like that and is it really FOR REAL???

Every morning, before I have to go to work, I watch the early morning religous TV. Last week, two creationists were debating "Young Earth vs. Old Earth"... I almost threw the remote at the TV and screamed "How about No God!". I calmed down after I had myself a poptart.

I watch the shows for early morning entertainment, a little humor, I'm not religious. I am also addicted to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, its good television. I dont watch it because I believe any of it is true (says the philosopher with the pentagram avatar who calls himself "Yahweh"). |

Religious shows
The only thing I can say about some of the religious shows that I've seen, is:
"What exactly is the deal with their hair?" |

I guess I'm on the opposite end. I can't stand to watch it or listen to it. Makes my head want to explode with "ya right, ya right, ya right, that's so stupid, ugh, that's not logical, what?????"
I can't stand it!! I want to scream at them and tell them that AIDS IS A VIRUS! IT CAN'T think to itself "oh here's a gay person, i think I will infect them". Or I want to taunt them with "your son is gay, and yes, that purple telletubby did the yellow one up the @ss"!! Yeha, Barney is child molester. Next time you see ANYONE dressed up like a dinosaour, then you better RUN for you life! NO, if you donate your organs, your chances of getting into heaven aren't any less than the zero chance of you going there when you die with all your body parts and all the dead red blood cells and sperm and skin cells that you've ever had in your life! Yes, you have to collect all the dust in your house and every eye lash that falls off and every sperm that leaks out, so that you can be 'complete' and go to heaven! ***breathes*** Just like those shows on the proof of Aliens and UFO's and how they made the pyramids....(holds fingers behind back so I don't type another rant)

Occasionally I have turned on Benny Hinn for a few seconds because my semi-dyslexia tells me it is Benny Hill. You would think I would eventually learn my lesson but no...
I get too angry watching/listening to this stuff to find any comedic value in it (well, except for some of the songs -- those crack me up). I remember once listening to a Christian radio talk show where a young boy called in to ask what he should do about this bully who kept beating him up at school. The host told him to put his love and faith in the one true lord and savior Jesus Christ etc. etc. etc. I nearly drove my car off the road. How about telling your parents? Or a teacher? Or the principal? Or taking a self-defense class? Or SOMETHING. Nope. Just Jesus. |

everytime I encountered Gene Scott on the tv he was mostly showing videos of his gaited American Saddlebreds (horses). I didn't even realize it was a "religious" program, just horses, horses, horses. Unfortunately, not the type I'm interested in... but to show gaited Saddle Horses takes TON of money, so he must be doing okay financially, like Mr. Hinn.

You've not experienced Hagee until you've endured one of his sermons from the comfort of a pew in his auditorium at Cornerstone.
Anyway, the other day I was digging on the radio when I came across a Christian channel. Somebody was on there explaining how the fact that we can see galaxies whose light should've taken millions of years to get to us proves that God is omnipotent, since obviously He had to change or bend the laws of physics at some point to get that light to travel here in a matter of only a few thousand years. Then a show called "Flashpoint"(?) came on, and the commentator expressed anger that the TV show MI5, in one of its episodes, featured the MI5 agents battling against antiabortion fanatics who were bombing clinics and doctors' cars. "When there are so many real enemies like Islamic fundamentalists around, why do the show's creators have to invent an imaginary enemy? It's because political correctness has made it forbidden to have Muslim bad guys, but encourages stereotypical "crazy" or "crackpot" Christians!" I got the impression that this guy wouldn't be happy with any show that didn't feature an Osama Bin Laden-type mjain villain. Meanwhile, I didn't hear him say anything bad about the real crazy-anti-abortion bombing fanatics who were the inspiration for the MI5 episode. |

I was raised RC (it didn't take) and remember him on TV from when I was a kid. This was in the 50's and being a kid I dismissed it as more of the same dreary, dry catechism that I was forced to endure. I recall that he was very popular back then and was one of the very few religious figures on TV. When I see him now, he strikes me as really creepy. His Bishops outfit with all the accessories adds to the weirdness of it all. But mostly, it's his manner of delivery that gives me the willies. The way he stares at the camera during long pauses; the way he sweeps his cape around for dramatic effect. His message is the one I remember from so long ago: God is watching you and taking names! The Catholic church in the 50's was a scary thing for a kid. We have seen recently how it has degenerated into a physically as well as emotionally dangerous place for kids. I didn't buy into it then but could not articulate my reasons. Now I know that my intuitive feelings were correct. I watch him from time to time only to reaffirm my judgement that the RC church holds nothing for me. |

I gotta say I miss the oldies, Jim and TammyFaye, Orel Roberts, Garner Ted Armstrong, Theodore Ebb. Man were they entertaining to say the least.
Today my favourite if I can get him is David J. Smith on the radio and Jack and Rexella. I just sit there trying to imagine what that bubble headed Rexella must look like when she gets up in the morning! I personally think she looks like a praying mantis. "That's right Rexella!" "That's right Jack!" "That's right Rexella!" "That's right Jack!" Man those two are funnier than Abbot and Costello! I will say one thing...If you are a rug spotter, you can't beat the evangelists unless it is the Grand Ole Opry reunion show. |
