Smoking gun for Columbia?
Just reported. Internal NASA memo. Some engineers believed the foam falling into the shuttle may have caused a 2 1/2 feet long by 7 1/2 inch wide gash in the tiles.
Was 2 1/2 feet long and study was completed 2 days before re-entry. Seems as though that was worse case senerio.

If that's true, is the implication that NASA engineers on the ground knew of the damage, but given that there was no practical way of doing anything about it, tried re-entry regardless?
