Rendition Goes Wrong

In the name of terror, an innocent man is kidnapped, drugged

THE story of Khaled Masri, a German citizen of Lebanese descent kidnapped by masked CIA agents and held in isolation for five months, gives an extraordinary insight into how "rendition" works.
It also highlights the hazards of giving the CIA a free hand and the embarrassment the practice poses not just for America but for its allies, many of which have long known of the program.
Not only was Mr Masri picked up by the CIA in a Hollywood-style operation but it has emerged that he was one of a growing number of "erroneous renditions".
The story began on New Year's Eve 2003, when the Macedonian police picked up Mr Masri as he crossed the border from Serbia into Macedonia.
He said he was travelling for private reasons after a quarrel with his wife. But the police noticed that his name was similar to a known associate of a September 11 hijacker and insisted that his passport was forged.
When they passed on news of their arrest to the CIA, the acting local station chief reacted with great excitement, The Washington Post reported on Sunday.
So did the head of the al-Qaeda unit of the CIA's counter-terrorism centre, a woman with "spiked hair that matched her in-your-face personality" and an aggressive style said to mirror President George Bush's mood.
In early 2004, as Mr Masri languished in a motel room in Skopje, she argued vigorously that he was probably a terrorist and should be imprisoned and interrogated immediately.
After 23 days she won the argument. He was taken from his room, blindfolded and drugged by men in masks and black clothes. He was flown to Afghanistan, where he was held for five months.

Yes, that was all it took, a similar name to someone else, and a woman with spiky hair and an attitude.

Also scary, the decision making process when it was realised they had the wrong man.

Laugh, and the world laughs with you!

Mr Ahern said in Washington yesterday that he accepted Dr Rice's assurance, which had confirmed what US officials had told the Government consistently.

"She was very categorical that Shannon has not been used for anything untoward. We fully accept the categorical assurance of a friendly nation," Mr Ahern said.

Just imagine the media publicity and outcry had the old USSR been accused of such.
The US and UK involvement in torture and "extraordinary rendition" is disgraceful - these are major democracies, signatories to all sorts of international conventions, all of which have been jettisoned as excess baggage in the so-called war on terror.

This one looks pretty bad. If it is true, we owe the man some serious compensation.

Perhaps after we've won the War on Terror, the world will be safe from people like us. Wait....
