"It's quiet right now, but it's possible there will be further violence," said Berlin police spokesman Ralph Gizinski.

The violence erupted without warning toward the end of a peaceful protest by about 4,000 people in the Mauerpark, in the Prenzlauer Berg district where the Berlin Wall stood.

A group of 200 anarchists hurled bottles and rocks and shot fireworks at police, who charged the group, arresting 97 of them. Violence in the area lasted three hours, with street barricades set ablaze and some shop windows smashed.

The German capital has been marred by May Day clashes between anarchists and police every year since 1987. Last year rampaging youths caused extensive damage, setting luxury cars and bus shelters on fire.

LONDON BRACED FOR VIOLENCE

In London, radical anti-capitalist activists had a hit list of more than 50 "companies of mass destruction" in their sights in protests that police feared could turn violent.

Sorry to stray on-topic, but this seems like business as usual. Less than half the people mentioned were involved in rallies that had anything to do with the Iraq war (according to the numbers and details in the article). I wouldn't say these demonstrators were "bedwetters" in that sense.

This article lumped just about every current demonstration on Earth into one story. I'm not sure if they are trying to insinuate that these are all war protests. Seems to just be another May Day Protest story, although through the first half of the article, it led me to believe the story was all anti-war demonstrations and that that the entire world is just "screaming bloody murder" about the war. Sounds like most of these people were protesting their own economies and issues.

Bedwetters? If you want to insult a liberal, then call him/her a "liberal" (and maybe do it somewhere else too). It doesn't seem to apply anyways since the Iraq conflict wasn't the focus of many of these events. What was the point of this thread anyways? I'm not sure I've addressed it I think this thread was started as an excuse to use the term "bedwetter".

I think in all the talk about his choice of words, people are missing the point that quite a few of these "protests" are basically riots. This happens every year. The Left, particularly the European Left, decided to hold an annual riot on May 1. Everyone just seems to accept that this is going to happen. Why isn't something done about this?

I was overseas a few years ago talking to some european and austrailian guys in a bar, and they thought all americans were arrogant jesus freaks. So I'm sure my perception is limited because I've never been to Europe for an extended period of time. It seems that there are a lot of watermelon people (green on the outside red on the inside) in Europe and some of them are in power.

May Day is a celebration that in the vast majority of cases are peaceful. The media mainly focuses when there's trouble, and that of course can give the wrong impression that May Day arrangements are always pested by violence. While I'm sure there are plenty of cases to point to, the reality might show that it's only 1% or even 0,1% of cities that experience such troubles. It's a shame that such a day at times gets ruined by a small group of rock throwing lunatics.

So in truth, you don't know how many of the protesters were "fanatics". They could be reasonable people who believed in the cause. Tarring them all with the sam "bedwetter" brush is a bit like calling all conservatives "fundamentalists". You simply cannot ascribe a single set of motives and feelings to a whole group of individuals. If you have a single person that you want to label as a "fanatic" based on what they have said, I will listen respectfully, but I doubt you even know who any of these protestors are.

And about idealolgy. I don't believe that people subscribe to any given ideology simply to "p*ss people off". I think that however misguided, everybody believes that they are doing what is best for humanity, their country, or the world. I think that many of them on both sides are short-sighted, but I don't think any truly belive that they are doing the wrong thing, but damn the torpedoes.

Exactly. Some of them are. Not all of them. All I ask is that you give the same witholding of judgment to war protesters as you do to Dixie Chick boycotters: Accept that some of them are fanatics and some are not.

BTW. Trent Lott is not a fanatic, though he showed extremely bad judgment. It's hard to give Santorum the same benefit of the doubt. The interviewer gave him every opportunity to back off of his tirade, but he just continued on in a way that few reasonable people can defend. He's about as much a fanatic for the right wing as Al Sharpton is for the left wing.
