Why No Abramoff ?
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Abramoff article in VAnity Fair where he essentailly calls a bunch of Republicans liars for saying they don't know who he is.
He calls out Bush, DeLay, Gingrich, and a whole host of other Republicans who have asserted they don't know Abramoff. He mentions specific conversations, dinners together, sitting at luxury boxes together, pictures and so on. Lurker |

We were waiting for you to start one.
Anyway, I don't know that it comes as a surprise that Republicans want to distance themselves from Abramoff. Some of them may have done legitimate business with him. However, they don't want to commit political suicide by coming forth and reliving camp fire stories with the guy. BTW, I don't remember DeLay claiming that he doesn't know Abramoff. That would seem to be a silly claim for him to make considering the trips they've taken together. |

I logged in today thinking there was going to be a lot of talk about this so was surprised when I saw none.
I understand politicians won't want to chare campfire stories of their associations with Abramoff but to outright lie is just idiotic. My guess is they thought they could talk to Abramoff and convince him to keep quiet. I also guess that they are calling him right now to settle him down. Lurker |

I don't know about idiotic, just par for the course. I suppose they thought they had another Scooter they could sell down the river. I do agree that it wasn't too bright for them to believe that however. Abramoff would gladly sell you his first born tomorrow for a hamburger today.

It's just the "Big Lie" technique. If they deny that it all happened, and the media passes along their lies long enough, enough people will believe it that it doesn't matter.
Yes, that does mean that they are not merely liars, but intentional liars, and that they intentionally use denial as a way to get away with crimes. |

I think Bill Moyers presents a realistic picture of the whole mess. The following thread by zakur has a link to Moyers. It's good bed-time reading.
