I was reading Vine Deloria, Jr.'s Red Earth, White Lies. It's surprising how this guy can mix in incredibly insightful analysis in one sentence, and absolute utter garbage in the next. Anyway, I read the part about Chief Joseph, when he surrendered, giving General Miles a tablet he was wearing around his neck as a gift. Chief Joseph said the tablet had been in his family for generations. When examined, it was found out that it was actually a 3,000 year old Mesopotamian cuneiform tablet that detailed the sale of a goat.
Turns out the story about the tablet was actually true, the tablet does exist, and is at West Point. I was wondering if there was anyone who knew of any information on where this tablet actually came from? I assume Chief Joseph was given it by the missionaries that he was so close to, but I wondered if anyone knew of any sources on how Chief Joseph actually acquired the tablet? I am doing a discussion panel on Vine Deloria, Jr., and would like to point out how nonsensical some of his assumptions are.
