9/11: the musical...

To the tune of "reviewing the situation" from Oliver (Tune, and accompaniment, here) (or you could just trust me that it scans perfectly), the conspiracy theorist's soliloquy..

****

A man’s got a brain, hasn’t he?
One he can strain—hasn’t he?
And though I’d be the first one to say that I’m no Ph. D.,
I’m finding it hard to accept what The Man’s telling me….

I’m reviewing the situation:
Could the government be telling us the truth?
No explosives? No detonation?
Better try to turn meself into a sleuth!
And a sleuth would sift through all the facts
Decide which ones to call the facts
And thoroughly review the facts,
Distort and misconstrue the facts,
And suddenly see why the facts
Will force me to deny the facts…
I think I’d better think it out again!

A fact, you can fudge, anyway;
I’d just hold a grudge, anyway.
Left without a theory to explain how the towers fell
So how to make people attend to the stories I tell?

I’m reviewing the situation:
I must quickly make up everything I know:
Dummy aircraft—no conflagration—
Just the CIA producing quite a show!
And though it is against all odds
I’ll claim the airplanes carried pods
The people—sacrificial lambs—
Were really only holograms;
They vanished into thin, thin air—
In fact, they were not ever there!...
I think I’d better think it out again.

So where did they go? Somebody?
Did any come home? Nobody…
All their families and sweethearts are telling the worst sort of lies!
Pay attention to me, and ignore all the tears in their eyes…

I’m reviewing the situation,
From the basement room that I still rent from Mom:
I’ve an active imagination—
When I close my eyes, I still can see the bomb!
I wonder who will take the blame
If someone should believe my claim,
Denies that I’m delusional,
Says everything’s illusional?
What lives might now be thrown apart--
I’m bigger, now, than Bonaparte!...
I think I’d better think it out again.

What happens when I’m seventy?
Must come a time, seventy.
When you’re old, and it’s cold, and your actions have made you a name
The one consolation—you’ve innocent victims to blame…

I’m reviewing the situation:
I’m a [rule 8] and a [rule 8] I’ll remain.
You will notice, with frustration,
There’s no evidence I’ve ever used my brain!
I won’t let nobody think for me
Or click to Gravy’s link for me
The evidence is not for me;
The truth is far too hot for me--
Don’t want to have to use my brain
The truth I will not entertain…
This rotten theory stinks to hell
But I have grown to love the smell…
I think I’d better think it out again!

I now have an image of a street busker at Ground Zero...dressed as Dylan Avery caricatured...

The music is part of the standard musical catalogue--in NYC, there must be thousands of pianists who already know it by heart. If only the city had an abundance of actor/singers, trying to eke out a living waiting tables or some such while they wait to make it big on Broadway... Hey, GZ is off-off-Broadway, isn't it? Get this on video, get your face, name, voice, into the public view?

Anybody know any guerilla musicians in the NYC area?

...come to think of it, I am certain the music (sans voice) would already be available on CD, for productions that cannot afford an orchestra. All we need is one actor/singer...

So Mercutio can you write one to the tune of the LIHOP MIHOP song?
Or could that be HIPHOP music?

Well, I could...but I might have to hit myself in the head with a brick a few times first to make it a challenge.

Are the complete (real) lyrics available anywhere? (from what I saw, meter and rhyme were used more as suggestions than rules, so it ought to be a piece of cake...)

Dead on.

Here's the other verse that I can remember:

Did the towers fall down by there own gravity?
Or was it planned demolition, my oh me?
Was a new pearl harbor the aim of the attack?
And is that the reason that we are in Iraq?

I don't know that song, but I'm going to learn it. I'm a semi-professional singer so as soon as I work it up I'll record a vocal and e-mail it to any sharpie who can mix it in.

Sounds beautiful.

Got it. It's not a tough song, I'll have this worked up in nothing flat. I've got a video montage in my head already. Should I do it in Fagin's voice, or would something else be better? Any suggestions? I have a pretty wide vocal range and know a lot of styles, try me...

Can you do it as Dylan Avery?

Funny, I have a video montage in my head too. Maybe I should sponsor a contest--you provide the soundtrack, we each have fun making a video!

Fagin or Dylan would be good but perhaps the irony of a conspiritorial Jew singing it would be lost on many people (ie the CT crowd). What about dressing like Fagin but using Dylan's voice??

Oh and top work there, merc!

jhunter--if possible, consider recording it at a couple of different tempos, in case one or another is easier for folks to work with for videos.

(I noticed that my own version is considerably slower than the midi that I linked. Could just be my lack of ability, but might make a difference in how much LC footage we can shove into one parody.)

Possibly dumb questions: Shouldn't jhunter record it at the same tempo as the accompaniment track? Or is he doing his own accompaniment?

Re: The video. Can I suggest adding subtitles to get the full effect of the lyrics?

Just FYI, the accompaniment I have runs 3:44. I could probably slow it down to 5:00 or so, maybe add a couple of video clips in there with that flute looping behind.. Also, it seems that Mercutio did an extra verse, so that will add some time too. So, I'd say this might run six minutes. We can jam a lot of parody into six minutes.

Hey! I did not add a verse! In fact, my parody steals from each verse in the original, in order to follow its structure. (google for the original lyrics, and you will see how much I stole!) I suspect that perhaps your accompaniment is truncated...

Hmph...

Hmmmmm, he said... well, if that's the case, I apologize. The words do match the original quite closely. At any rate, I'm rehearsing it now and hope to have a demo to share in a day or so. I'm leaning towards Fagin's voice, but I'll do it both ways (Fagin and Avery) and let the mixers decide.

I found this, to the tune of Darryl Worley's "Have You Forgotten"

Quote:
Blown to Kingdom Come

A 9/11 Truth Song by Ace Baker

I hear people knockin’ 9/11 truth
They call us tin foil hat wearin’ kooks
But what about the jet planes, flyin’ all around
While our mighty air defenses were standin’ down?
They say that we should blindly believe "our" government
Before you start your preaching let me ask you this my friend

Have you forgotten
What we saw as one?
Oh those towers turned to dust
They were blown to kingdom come
Have you forgotten
Just how fast they fell?
Office fires can’t do that
No there ain’t no way in hell
And you try to blame it all upon bin Laden
Have you forgotten?

They destroyed the molten metal from WTC
It’s too incriminating for us to see
It’ll blow the cover, it would solve the crime
The biggest inside job of all time
Some see a police state, comin’ into view
After 9/11 man I'd have to say that's true

Chorus

They got their new Pearl Harbor
To justify their wars
The power and the money
That’s what they did it for

Have you forgotten
All the people killed?
As the empire marches on
Down to the oil fields
Have you forgotten
‘Bout “our” Pentagon?
All the loved ones that we lost
To the Neo-Cons.
Face the truth, forget about bin Laden
Have you forgotten?
Have you forgotten?

Quote:

Have You Forgotten

I hear people saying we don't need this war
I say there's some things worth fighting for
What about our freedom and this piece of ground
We didn't get to keep 'em by backing down
They say we don't realize the mess we're getting in
Before you start your preaching let me ask you this my friend

Have you forgotten how it felt that day?
To see your homeland under fire
And her people blown away
Have you forgotten when those towers fell?
We had neighbors still inside going thru a living hell
And you say we shouldn't worry 'bout bin Laden
Have you forgotten?

They took all the footage off my T.V.
Said it's too disturbing for you and me
It'll just breed anger that's what the experts say
If it was up to me I'd show it everyday
Some say this country's just out looking for a fight
After 9/11 man I'd have to say that's right

Have you forgotten how it felt that day?
To see your homeland under fire
And her people blown away
Have you forgotten when those towers fell?
We had neighbors still inside going thru a living hell
And you say we shouldn't worry 'bout bin Laden
Have you forgotten?

I've been there with the soldiers
Who've gone away to war
And you can bet that they remember
Just what they're fighting for

Have you forgotten how it felt that day?
To see your homeland under fire
And her people blown away
Have you forgotten when those towers fell?
We had neighbors still inside going thru a living hell
And you say we shouldn't worry 'bout bin Laden
Have you forgotten?

Have you forgotten all the people killed?
Some went down like heros in that Pennsylvania field
Have you forgotten about our Pentagon?
All the loved ones that we lost and those left to carry on
Don't you tell me not to worry about bin Laden
Have you forgotten?

Have you forgotten

Would you please record that for us, TS? I'd love to hear it. Thanks!

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that "Have you forgotten" is a country song.

Fish in a barrel, that's what that is.

I am also in the stone age, so I can't host it, but I can bump this thread so that the folk here who walk without dragging knuckles can come to your rescue.

Thanks for your help Merc. BTW, did you have any particular naughty word in mind? I used one that's close to "brassard", but any two-syllable bad word would work.

ETA: Or, since this is a JREF production, do you think I should actually say "rule eight"?

Off to change the band-aids on my knuckles now...
