)!St. Louis named most dangerous U.S. city POSTED: 8:28 a.m. EST, October 30, 2006 ST. LOUIS, Missouri (AP) -- A surge in violence made St. Louis the most dangerous city in the country, leading a trend of violent crimes rising much faster in the Midwest than in the rest of nation, according to an annual list. The city has long fared poorly in the rankings of the safest and most dangerous American cities compiled by Morgan Quitno Press. Violent crime surged nearly 20 percent in St. Louis from 2004 to last year, when the rate of such crimes rose most dramatically in the Midwest, according to FBI figures released in June. "It's just sad the way this city is," resident Sam Dawson said. "On the news you hear killings, someone's been shot." The ranking, being released Monday, came as the city was still celebrating Friday's World Series victory at the new Busch Stadium. St. Louis has been spending millions of dollars on urban renewal even as the crime rate climbs. Mayor Francis Slay did not return calls to his office seeking comment Sunday. http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/10/30/cit....ap/index.html |

St. Louis is where the action is, be it baseballs or bullets.

A little more seriously, if St. Louis is the most dangerous U.S. city, then the U.S. is in really good shape.

My understanding that Camden is thrilled that they dropped to #5 on the list.

You don't spend much time on the North Side, do you?
Nor do you take walks along the Riverfront or Downtown at Night, I think. ... Seriously, most of the people in the metro area live in nearby suburbs (ex-Florissant resident here) and the City population has been shrinking for decades. So it doesn't surprise me much. They published the entire 371-city list in The Huntsville Times this morning. Safest city is Brick, New Jersey. My town (Huntsville, AL) is #278, which surprises me a bit. |
