RandiSpace V1.0

In the ever-growing quest to bring the JREF to a wider audience, I have volunteered to run a MySpace site promoting the Foundation, the forum, TAM and all associated goodness. I'm very happy to report that this idea received the blessing of the powers that be.

The preliminary version of the site is now up and running. You can find it at http://profile.myspace.com/theamazingrandi
The Swift Bulletin will be added to the profile weekly in the blogs. Last week's bulletin is up there already to get us underway.

There is much work to be done on the profile still, and I'm open to all suggestions and contributions from forum members to help it on it's way. I already have a lot of content in the queue to be included, but if you have anything you'd like see added, reworded, corrected etc. please message the profile or PM me - I can't guarantee to keep an eye on this thread forever. Help me build RandiSpace V1.1 and beyond!

Plus, of course, if you're already on myspace then please add the profile to your friends list and save it to your Top Friends - there's a large community out there to try and reach so every add is valuable.

Thanks,
Brett.

Very nice site!

Although I think the Zodiac sign should read: FSM (or something actually funny).

Wow! Randi has Carl Sagan in his Friends network - this almost makes me want to get a Myspace account.

Yes. I'm looking into either disabling or humourising that function at some point.

Thanks everyone who's shown an interest so far - looks like I'm gonna be busy.

Claus and I were planning, months back, on shooting a series of short documentary clips covering common topics and making them available to the public, where they could be used, since I live so close to the JREF. I would have been doing the shooting though, while he did the editing. (Claus hates shooting. )

One of the most interesting and useful video clips Randi has done was the classroom astrological profile demonstration. My sister had an interest in astrology, frequently correlating my personality traits with my sign, when I explained the classroom demonstration Randi did, and she was very surprised and turned about. I think there are dozens of such notions that could go up in a puff of smoke with smart, effective demonstrations like these, and the world would be better for it. A similer series of "fooled you" educational material on how cold and hot reading can yield a result no different than guesswork, yet seem to be meaningful, would be excellent to throw into the public awareness to start off with.

Any links to downloadable videos will be much appreciated. I've been having some trouble uploading video content so far but will persevere.

From the site:

And yet somehow, Carl Sagan is in your friends network, and also says 'thanks for the add'...

Thanks. I only mentioned it because of an ad that appeared in our local freebie rag for a "Natural Born Psychic" -- I kid you not.

Here's what "Milorad" claims to do:

Gypsy Tarot Card and Psychic Reading Expert
(Italics and other embellishments his.)

Removing Curses and Restoring Peace of Mind

Is Your Relationship Breaking Down? I Will Bring Back Your Loved One Or Help You Find True Love ( -- this text is surrounded by hearts )

Aura and Depression Healer

Biotherapist

Removing Bad Luck

Evil Eye and Black Magic

Happiness * Business * Marriage * Money ( -- the asterisks are hearts )

You Have Questions? Milorad Has Answers

and so on...

Need one say more?

"Milorad" has a site "under construction." Currently it shows his ad just as it appeared in our local rag.

Because some MySpace members might do searches within the website, I suggest adding words like dowsing, dowser, psychic, vanPraag, clairvoyant, and such.

The best way to promote on Myspace is in the Top 8. What you want to do is swap top 8 spots with other good hitting pages.

Shoot over a friend request and note to www.myspace.com/overmaniscoming

and we will swap a top 8 spot with you!

Nice one, Brett. I don't know how you find the time. Oh, that's right, you don't spend every evening drinking and going through these forums.

If you do find a way to get the sodding star sign off one's profile, please let us all know.

I keep reading the title of this thread as "Randi Spice" and it disturbs me to get a mental image of Mr Randi as one of The Spice Girls. So disturbing I felt the need to share it, sorry.

Update!

The new Swift Bulletin is now blogged.
The friend requests keep flooding in - 114 already approved and 80+ still in the queue. I'm adding a comment to every newly added friend as well, which is what's taking the time.
All of Randi's books available via Amazon are now listed and each title links directly to their Amazon page.

I have a queue of messages, which will all be read and dealt with accordingly as soon as I've caught up with everything else.

Content won't be updated quite as quickly as I'd hoped but videos, links, articles and improvements to the styling are all coming soon.

I'm chuffed with the response so far. Please keep promoting the site on your own though, good folk.

Incidentally, I just spotted this on the profile details...

I'm sure Syvlia would LOVE that, although it will probaby only last a few more minutes - the page views have been going up so quickly. Still, I thought it was a fine coincidence.

Cool beans - I will send friend request etc.

Oberman if you have any other tips for marketing on MS, could you please, please PM me? I am trying to market my novels on there & so far, it's been less than successful. I think when people see an author marketing so actively, they assume you are vanity publishing (and MS is full of such things!) - which I am not! I'm def. going wrong somewhere - my profile has been up for 3 months and I've only had 600+ views! In MS terms - that's not very much at all! I can't even give stuff away!

Thanks - sorry for whinging!

RSL - would it be worth having a 'Stop Sylvia Brown' page as a micro-site to the main page?

I'm looking into that very idea, DV. Luckily, my two daughters are MySpace gurus.

I noticed there are a few Sylvia Browne groups on MySpace, with thousands of members.

So I figured a companion StopSylviaBrowne MySpace might be a good thing.[/quote]

V1.1 beta ... ?

Howdy.

Bumping this thread firstly to raise a little more awareness of the MySpace, and secondly to let anyone who may be interested know that the profile has had a lovely little spruce up with a new background, lots of new links and a hazardous floating banner (which is probably all out of alignment). It remains robustly non-festive

Less than 3 weeks after announcing the profile here on the forum and we've shot up to over 500 friends already. How lovely!

If you'd like to help you can add the profile to your top friends list - it may not seem much but it really does work.

Thanks to everyone who's helped me out along the way,
Brett.

* bump *

Just over 6 weeks into the life of this profile (44 days since it went public, to be precise) and we're up to 910 links, or "friends" to use the vernacular.

Ok, so there are a few kooks who have attached themselves to it and this is not only to be expected but encouraged. However, I remain hugely surprised at the existing community (for want of a better description) of skeptics out there in the MySpace world. The vast majority of friend requests received have been from card-carrying, flag-waving skeptics. I should know, I look at each of their profiles, even if it's only a scan, just to satisfy myself that it's not some kind of scam business or similar, otherwise unwelcome person.

So, here I am again, bumping this thread to promote a little more awareness to those who might somehow have escaped my wrath so far, and to thank those who've supported and helped in whatever manner, but especially Jeff who has given up his precious time, lots of advice and also helped me deal correctly with some rather... unusual correspondence..

If you saw the profile when it was in it's infancy I'd appreciate you having another look - there have been lots of inclusions and improvements made, mostly off the back of suggestions received from you good folk, but I'm always looking for new ways to improve it.

[/ramble]

Thanks then, everyone.
Brett.

I'm there! But I'm not Orangutan on MySpace. I was surprised to see how many friends I recognized. I use different pseudonyms on different boards. I guess alot of people do not.

And anyone wanting to track you down there can entertain themselves Cluedo style by searching through all 910 friends and trying to work out which one is you!

That might entertain some people, some sad loanly or extreamly board at work people!
I have certainly left clues in my posting here about where I live and What gender I am. First one to post my MySpace picture here wins 2 free Internets!

Randispace V1.1 - now officially launched!

It's been a long while... time I brought you a little update.

Friends at time of writing = 2434. There are still 20 or so new requests coming in every day!

There are now two blogs and bulletins issued per week. For the past couple of weeks I have been blogging and bulletining (???) the Randigram as well as Swift, and there has been a large response, 100% positive.

And finally, the video uploader is working for me, at last! Since yesterday, I have been uploading as many videos as I can get my hands on. Here's where you can give me a hand.
Check out the vids posted (I've got just one or two left still to upload) and see if you have an appropriate vid that I don't. Please, send me a PM if you do so we can make the necessary arrangements.
MySpace rules are that max video size is 100Mb, and I have found that mp4 is working best with the uploader.

Of course, if there are any content or style suggestions you'd like to make I'm always happy to hear from you.

OK, I'm off to check on my video uploads.
Thanks all,
Brett.

You could remove the Zodiac sign from the myspace page.

We can do that.

In the case of anyone being interested, here is a thread started by someone who has been in touch with the Profile recently.

http://www.yayhooray.com/thread/1298...rmal-Challenge

Might be worth keeping an eye on developments (maybe even a quick 'poke' to certain contributors), or it maybe it'll just fizzle out.
