What's up with Sylvia's Fingernails

This may be covered somewhere but I couldn't seem to search it out.

What is the deal with Sylvia's long fingernails? Is she some sort of 18th century Confuscian bureaucrat? They must make it a pain to smoke.

Some people think they are attractive, I guess. I think they are the 'skanky ho' look, myself. But what do I know, anyway. I've never made People Magazine Best Dressed.

It's a common fashon for the citizens of the breakaway Republic of Whitetrashikstan. That and eye makeup.

They are her power. Much like Samson, God told Sylvia that if she cuts her fingernails, her psychic power will disappear.

I call her Dr. Claw.

So then, when did she cut them?

She is everything I imagined Baba-Yaga and the wicked which from Hansel and Gretel to be. I can't see how her fingernails help her image or make it easier for her to sell woo. My only theory comes from what my jazz guitar teacher told me about his goatee, "I have to look different than the people I am playing for. You don't go to see someone like yourself play." I just think that this is a concept that would be way beyond a hack like sylvia. She could make more money and be less obviously fraudulent with some simple skills. I also don't know how she smokes with those nails.

Thank you very much for that image, SezMe.

I think I'd better go for a lie down

Long fingernails are sometimes considered a status symbol, in that they indicate that their owner never has to do any actual work.

It is part of the whole vampire motif, she needs long claw like fingernails for it to really work.

Oh and that is not the modern sexy vampire, but a proper traditional rotting corpse type.

So that's why she never contacted Randi -- it's impossible for her to dial a phone or type an email!!

It's because she is evil. All evil people have large horrible nails that are possibly sharp.

I told a friend that Randi was going after Sylvia. He said "oh no! She'll hurt him with those nails!"

So the nails are for self-defense.

I once shared an office with a chick with really long fingernails. It was amusing to watch her type. It's hard to describe, but she'd essentially type with the "pads" of her fingers, err, you know where your fingerprints are, instead of the tips.

I believe she was actually a touch-typist, not a hunt & pecker, which it makes it even more difficult unless all your fingers are the same length.

I think it's become a trademark/marketing thing...try describing her to someone...blond-dyed hair dumpy lady in her early 70's = no recognition. Say the nut with the crazy/scary nails and people know who you're talking about...
