Coin magic advice?
I have just bought J.B.Bobo's Modern Coin Magic and am looking for some tips on which might be the easier tricks for a novice to learn. I presume learning some classic palming techniques would be the absolute first thing necessary?
Also, are there techniques common to both card and coin tricks? The reason for asking is that I'd like, eventually, to perform some coin tricks for a friend who knows a few card tricks - so I'd prefer to avoid tricks which might use techniques which he may already know from his card tricks. |

yes, learn to classic palm. DO that and you will be able to do dozens of coin tricks.
To learn legit tricks, pick up a dvd of David Roth doing basic to intermediate coin magic. |

Let me recommend Michael Ammar's three videos on money magic. Ammar includes some tricks that have some fairly advanced handling, as well as some that require a little practice but are not all that difficult and are well-suited for a novice.
Ammar does tricks with coins and bills. One of his bill tricks (on Volume 3) is a favorite of Teller. Yes, that Teller! It's a trick Teller performed on "While You Were Out" and on the recent Penn & Teller NBC special. Ammar also has a video specially devoted to coin effects, and it is pretty good, too. It is one thing to read about a move in Bobo, and it is another thing to have it shown to you. |

You may also want to consider Dr. Michael Rubinstein's Encyclopedia of Coin Sleights DVD's. There are three volumes:

Thanks folks.
Looks like there's some excellent learning aids there - I spent a good hour last night browsing coinvanish.com ... and with the unnatural strength of the GBP now is a great time to be buying dvds priced in dollars! |

I find learning tricks from Bobo to be really uninspiring and difficult. The Royal Road to Coin Magic it ain't.
I'd also recommend getting some vids like Ammar to learn from. He has a complete into to coin magic DVD which is a good start. The easist but effective coin tricks I know are in Magic from Maui by Carl Andrews. There is an ungimmicked "Hopping Half" effect - dead easy. And there is a gimmicked "Coins Across" again dead easy but very effective. I also like Gary Ouelett's "Silver Passage" which is a coins through table that is elegantly arranged to make it simple and deceptive. I think this is a great manuscript to get your hands on because you get taught some simple sleights that are very useful. I use the basic false transfer in this routine as my default vanish. |

I really like Garrett Thomas' coins across (Imagination Coins). But I like most of his stuff, particularly his thinking and theories about magic in general.
