Nice on-line lecture (mp3 and PowerPoint) on science health, happiness
Dear JREF members,
I listened to a lecture today, that was really good. Following the links in the forwarded e-mail below brings you to and on-line lecture on science and psedoscience, which will allow you to download an mp3 audio file and a Powerpoint file of a lecture to the general public on science and pseudoscience. Brian === Begin forwarded message: From: "Chris Tyler" <ctyler[at]senseaboutscience-dot-org> Date: April 10, 2007 5:46:55 AM MDT To: "'Dr Brian Foley'" <btf[at]lanl.gov> Subject: Sense About Science News Update Dear friends Please find attached (and pasted below) a brief news update. A fuller newsletter, including some developments on evidence-based medicine, GM and MRI, will be with you in a few weeks. As always, keep telling us about what is happening in your area and if you meet anyone who would like to volunteer with us, put them in touch. Best wishes Sarah On behalf of Dr Christopher Tyler Scientific Support Coordinator Sense About Science Reg. Charity No. 1101114 Tel: +44 (0)20 7478 4380 [www-dot-senseaboutscience-dot-org] Sense About Science is a small charity promoting evidence and good science for the public. We depend on donations, large and small, from people who support our work. Dear Friends Many of you have been in touch to ask about the availability of Ray Tallis’ wonderful talk, Longer, Healthier, Happier? Science, Human Needs and Human Values, from the Sense About Science Annual Lecture 2007 in March. I’m delighted to say that The Times now have the AV recording on their site, linked midway into Ray’s opinion piece at [www-dot-timesonline-dot-co-dot-uk/tol/comment/columnists/guest_contributors/article1449416.ece] Our website also has a transcript and powerpoint slides at [www-dot-senseaboutscience-dot-org-dot-uk/lecture] A few further quick things… On 17th March we launched Making Sense of the Weather and Climate – a 16-page briefing by some of the UK’s leading weather and climate specialists to respond to the common refrain “if they can’t even get the weather right for the next few days, how can they tell what will happen in 50 years time?” It is available from our weather pages. The scientists’ presentations on forecasting, from the launch event at St John’s College Research Centre, are being added (slowly). The publication by our Voice of Young Science network, Standing up for Science: a guide to the media for early career researchers, was widely publicised and ran out in a few weeks! New copies will be available at the end of April and we hope to fulfil orders then. In the meantime, please do tell early career scientists and engineers about the next two VoYS workshops in May and September. As many of you will know, Frances Downey has taken up a wonderful offer of a fully supported PhD (in using Raman Spectroscopy as a cancer diagnostic tool) at Kings College London. We are delighted with all that Frances has done with us and also that she has chosen to work with us as a volunteer, heading up the fast-growing Voice of Young Science (VoYS) programme. We are pleased to have two new additions to our team: Aarathi Prasad who begins this week and Alice Tuff who begins in May. Aarathi did her PhD in molecular genetics and then worked as a post-doc, television researcher, medical writer and parliamentary researcher before joining Sense About Science to handle the growing volume of requests and inquiries and run our responsive work. Alice is a cell biologist and volunteered at Sense About Science in 2006, when she conducted undercover research on the prescription of homeopathic anti-malarials. After all the excitement she took a 6 month break to go travelling around Asia. She has returned refreshed to take up a full time role with Sense about Science as a project and fundraising assistant. A fuller newsletter, including some developments on evidence-based medicine, GM and MRI, will be with you in a few weeks. As always, keep telling us about what is happening in your area and if you meet anyone who would like to volunteer with us, put them in touch. Best wishes Sarah Crossman on behalf of Chris Tyler |
