Amaz!ng Meeting Update: 5.5, 6, and Galapagos

Hello.. sorry to be so quiet lately. I'm just swamped with work.

If you visit http://www.amazingmeeting.com, you'll get the latest update. There will be a lot more information coming.

For those who want the brief run down..

1) TAM 5.5 will be January 26, 2008 at the Best Western Plantation, in Plantation, Florida. There will be a workshop on the Friday before, and outing on the Sunday afterwards, and a tour of the JREF which isn't that far away.

2) Galapagos will be August 8-18, 2008. Leaving from Quito, Ecuador. Pricing starts at $5400 per person. It is all-inclusive.. meaning even bar drinks and tips on board, but you will have to get to Quito on your own. Much more info on that. There's a great video at http://www.amazingmeeting.com to watch.

3) TAM 6 will be the June 19, 2008 weekend at the Flamingo in Las Vegas.

I like the forum flavor of 5.5 (except the Rebecca part). Three of the speakers are regular posters.

I also looked at the hotel website:

Yep, so we're good to go!

I hate you guys.

Edit: Wait a minute... this year's Commencement is Friday-Sunday... Mmmmmaybe... Depends on a) me graduating in time and b) when the departmental ceremony is. I'm not going to the university graduation to sit on my ass until they say, "...Math department, stand up. You've graduated..."

Woo-hoo!

FYI, I priced some flights from NYC to Quito for this August to get an estimate for budgeting, and there are round trip flights as low as $559. Most change in Miami.

So stinkin' excited. Can't wait for either... well, I can wait, as I have no choice, but I'd rather it already be the time where I could sign up!

Yay Galaps! Yay 5.5! SuperYay to the Flamingo!!!

Probably won't make this one. We'll see when it gets closer.

Where do I send the check? I'm serious,Jeff, I am not missing this trip for nothing.

I rather like the Flamingo, It's nearer the "new center" with some of the newer places yet still a touch of Old Vegas in it's name. I'll plan on it.

I think I'm in for all three: TAM5.5, TAM6, and the Galaps!

Does that make me crazy?

Hutch and others.. we'll be taking reservations soon.. but if you'd like, anyone can call 1-954-467-1112 and put a $1000 deposit down now, and have their choice of cabins when we open it up. First come first served.

We'll call with details.. there are different levels.. nicer cabins at higher prices, as you'd expect. I'll release complete pricing info as soon as I can, but no matter what, you're safe with a $1000 deposit.

I assume that deposit is refundable up to a certain date?

Can we be guaranteed that the Galapagos cruise will be "Rebecca free"?

Man, so much cool stuff. It looks like I'll have to choose between TAM6 and the Galaps -- well, technically my bank account will choose.

No, it makes you rich.

I was hoping to do all three, but just after TAM5, I had to go and buy a new truck, somewhat unexpectedly. So now, I'm down to no more than TAM5.5 and 6, and even that will be tight. Overtime is the word of the day....

Nice price, jhuntington. Cheapest I've seen (Boston) is $760. But it's not the flight cost that's the problem. After BusterCon, TAM 5.5 and 6, ~$6000 plus flight & incidental costs really isn't in the realm of reality.....unless.....

Can I have whatever you get above and beyond what you need, Harry, since you'll be raking it in? Thanks. (No, I asked him first!)

I feel your pain. My last contract had me working insane weeks of overtime, because things were behind schedule. But, when you get that extra inflow of cash, suddenly it feels like it was all worth it.

If only it were so easy! Besides, most of the stuff I see, you'd need a big, specialized company to exploit. So there I'd be, trying to sell their own ideas back to them.....

I am positively vibrating with excitement.

Speakers aboard the Galapagos trip will have quite an enticement to give good presentations. One flubbed delivery, one Powerpoint error... it's over the side with 'em.

Jeff, if there had been just one more baby sea lion in that video I would've mailed you a check on the spot.

The check would have bounced, but the intent is clear.

Oh, and I found this pretty detailed review of an early trip on the same boat:

Just put down the deposit for the Galapgos. I am number 7.

I expected this thing to fill quickly. What are you people waiting for?

Will be needing a roomie at some point. If you are female and available you get first dibs. (Sorry Scrut, you fail on one of those criteria.)

Never been on a cruise before. Not sure what to expect.

I do have a great deal of experience in the water. Although I have not spent a great deal of time with snorkels and fins, I do own them and bet I can dive deeper than anybody else going on the trip. All bets to be paid off in drinks on the ship.

So who are the other six that have signed up?

Hmmmm. On that page, it says

I wonder if they'll have draining water going around clockwise vs. anticlockwise depending on which side of the Equator you are on? If so, I will be the least welcome guest they'll have ever had.

I'll have to work up some fun demos myself for the cruise. This ought to be fun...

But what happens to water that you drain exactly on the equator? Does it collapse into a singularity and later re-emerge from a drinking fountain at one of the poles?

TAM 5.1 and 5.2 were very nice. I looked for you.

I so would like to be there, if only to be part of the "over the side" crew for poor speakers. (19 years lifeguard experience = I'm an expert!)

Just put my deposit in. #12

Can't wait. I've never done a real cruise and am looking foward to this one. The closest I've been is a 4 day ferry ride from Seward AK to Seattle back in '84. That's one of the reasons I've passed on the upcoming cruise. The other reason is I'll take the money that would have to the Alaska cruise and put it aside for next year.

Note to self: get passport paperwork started soon!

I think she may have something to say about that.

Is she even going?

Could you demonstrate how to make Rebecca disappear?
