God is American

I was listening to NPR today (sorry no link, trust me), and they were interviewing some guy who is involved with Bald Eagles. In fact he had a pet one with him.

Bald Eagles have just been taken off the endangered list and he was asked to comment. He said (paraphrasing from memory) "he's sure god created the bald eagle for the US since it is such a powerful symbol of freedom".

The NPR interviewer neglected to ask the proper next question and just driveled on about bald eagles ....

And god created George Bush because he's such a powerful symbol of...?

Perhaps it was this Talk of the Nation segment:

www (dot) npr (dot) org (slash) templates (slash) story (slash) story.php?storyId=11515792

The audio should be up by 6PM ET.

I assume he means 'because it would later become a powerful symbol of freedom'?

If the turkey was chosen as national bird, would it be a symbol of freedom, too?

Yes, but we'd be eating eagles for our Thanksgiving Day meal.

What did the poor bastard bald eagle do before the United States of America was invented?

I understand that, before he was called to this duty, he was fishing quite happily in Canada.

What's most telling is that, prior to becoming the symbol of American strength, the eagle had a full head of hair.

I've always found it was a remarquably ugly bird ... note that as a citizen of a country with a rooster as the national bird*, I'm ill placed to criticize other nation's choices ...

* why the rooster ? It's the only bird who will keep singing with its feet deep in s**t.

Oh, so it's not the tryptophan in turkey that makes you sleepy. It's the freedom.
